Chapter 7 - Into the Abyss

The interior of the grain elevator was a cathedral of rusted steel and concrete dust. The only light came from the cold, gray winter afternoon filtering through the shattered skylights high above, casting long, eerie beams of light across the cavernous space.

In the center of the bay stood a massive, antique industrial elevator—a heavy steel cage suspended by thick, grease-covered cables that disappeared into the dark void of the upper floors.

Beside the cage, a large, diesel-powered auxiliary generator sat humming, its low, rhythmic vibration sending a terrifying physical shudder through Sarah’s boots.

It was the exact sound of her nightmare.

"I’m here, Viktor!" Sarah’s voice echoed through the massive, empty bay, carrying a firm, unyielding strength that surprised even herself. "I’m here! Let my daughter go!"

From the shadows behind the steel cage, a figure stepped into the pale light.

It was Viktor Drago. He was tall, his face scarred and weather-beaten, his cold blue eyes entirely devoid of human emotion. He wore a long, dark coat and heavy, black scuffed boots. In his right hand, he held a heavy tactical pistol, and in his left, he held a small, remote detonator.

He looked at Sarah, a cold, mocking smile breaking across his face. "The brave mother. You came alone. Where is your fireman?"

"He’s exactly where he needs to be," Sarah said, keeping her eyes locked onto his, refusing to look at the dark elevator shaft behind him. "Where is Clara?"

Drago laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "The girl is upstairs, in the old control room. If you want her, you’ll have to take the elevator up. But I’m afraid this elevator has a history of... technical difficulties."

He gestured to the heavy steel cage. The auxiliary generator hummed louder, the smell of burning diesel fuel filling the cold air.

"You cut the brake lines at the Grand Plaza," Sarah said, taking a slow step forward, keeping him focused entirely on her. "You let me fall."

"It was business, Sarah," Drago shrugged, his tone chillingly casual. "Julian Sterling paid me to clean the slate. And now, I’m cleaning the final spot."

Suddenly, the heavy concrete floor above them exploded.

A flash of bright orange light and a deafening roar shattered the silence of the bay as Mark’s tactical team breached the upper level. The shockwave sent a shower of concrete dust and sparks raining down upon them.

"Police! Drop your weapon!" Miller’s voice roared from the upper catwalks.

Drago’s eyes went wide with sudden, frantic rage. He realized he had been played. He didn't have the girl, and he was surrounded.

With a feral snarl, Drago raised his pistol, aiming directly at Sarah.

But before he could pull the trigger, a massive, dark figure vaulted over the rusted steel railing from the side. Mark slammed his body into Drago, the sheer force of the impact sending both men crashing into the heavy steel cage of the elevator.
