Chapter 13 - The Ghost of the Commerce Bank

The storm had fully descended upon Chicago by the time Mark drove his truck into the industrial district along the North Branch of the Chicago River. The rain fell in heavy, gray sheets, washing the grime of the city into the swollen gutters.

Inside the truck, the silence was thick, broken only by the rhythmic click of the windshield wipers and Clara's soft, rhythmic breathing as she slept in the back seat.

"The Chicago Commerce Bank was shut down three years ago after Julian Sterling’s assets were seized by the federal government," Sarah spoke, her laptop open on her knees as she analyzed the public records. "The building has been abandoned, scheduled for demolition next month. The vaults are supposed to be empty, Mark. The FBI cleared them out."

"They cleared out what they could find," Mark said, his jaw tight as he navigated the wet streets. "But Sterling was a shadow player. He didn't keep his real wealth in safety deposit boxes. He kept it in the structural foundation of the building itself. The caller... he called it the 'Thirteenth Vault.' It’s a hidden compartment beneath the main sub-basement, accessible only through the old pneumatic elevator shafts."

"And he wants you to go in there," Sarah said, her eyes wide with a sudden, sharp realization. "He wants a firefighter. Someone who knows how to navigate compromised structures, someone who has the heavy rescue tools to cut through reinforced steel without setting off the old pneumatic pressure alarms."

"I don't have a choice, Sarah," Mark said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, quiet whisper. "They have eyes on our house. They have eyes on the firehouse. If I don't give them what they want, they will find a way to get to Clara."

"We are not doing this alone, Mark," Sarah insisted, her hand wrapping around his forearm, her grip surprisingly strong. "We call Detective Miller. We call the FBI."

"If we call the feds, the caller will know," Mark said, shaking his head. "He’s on their secure lines. He knew the minute the feds closed the file on Slip 3. He’s inside the system, Sarah. This isn't just a street crew. This is someone with deep connections."

He pulled the truck into the shadow of an abandoned warehouse across from the derelict bank building. The limestone facade of the bank looked like a tomb, its high, arched windows boarded up with rotting plywood, covered in layers of faded graffiti.

Mark turned to Sarah, his gray eyes soft but filled with an intense, unyielding devotion. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. "I need you to stay here with Clara. Keep the engine running. If I am not back in thirty minutes, you take the truck and drive directly to Captain Higgins’ house. Do not look back."

"Mark, please," Sarah whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "Don't go into the dark again."

May you like

"I am the first one running toward you, Sarah," Mark murmured, kissing her forehead, his touch warm and lingering. "And I am always coming back."

He pulled his heavy tactical jacket tight, grabbed his Halligan bar and a portable concrete saw from the utility box in the back of the truck, and vanished into the driving rain toward the tomb of the Commerce Bank.
