Chapter 19 - The Siege of the Light

The twilight had settled over the coast, painting the sky in deep shades of purple and gold. But on the granite cliffs of Cape Elizabeth, the peace was shattered by the high-pitched whine of outboard motors.

Mark stood on the lower wooden steps of the dock, his heavy rescue axe in his hand, his body positioned perfectly in the shadow of the cliffside. Beside him, Caleb held a military-grade tactical rifle, his breathing slow and rhythmic as he watched the first rib touch the wooden pier below.

Four heavily armed operators in grey tactical gear stepped onto the dock, their weapons raised.

"Secure the target!" the lead operator shouted over the roar of the surf. "Take the fireman and the woman alive! Eliminate the rest!"

Before the operator could raise his rifle, Caleb fired.

A sharp, high-velocity round shattered the searchlight of the leading boat, sending a shower of sparks exploding into the dark water. The sudden darkness threw the operators into chaos.

Mark didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the wooden railing, dropping onto the deck of the rib with a force that sent two operators crashing into the water. He swung his heavy rescue axe, striking the steering console of the boat, destroying the electrical grid and plunging the dock into a complete, shadow-filled dark.

The remaining operators returned fire, their automatic weapons spitting bright tongues of yellow flame into the night. The sound was deafening, echoing off the granite cliffs like thunder.

Up on the cottage deck, Sarah stood near the door, her hand keeping a firm grip on her nine-millimeter pistol—the weapon Caleb had taught her to shoot during her recovery. She kept her body positioned over Clara, who was huddled safely in the reinforced pantry with Lily and Barnaby.

Suddenly, a shadow fell across the glass window of the kitchen.

A tall, lean figure stepped onto the deck. It was Thomas Thorne. He had survived the fire in Chicago, his face now covered in heavy white bandages, his eyes filled with a manic, desperate fury.

"Sarah!" Thorne shouted, his voice a cracked, dry sound. "Give me the tablet! Or I will burn this cottage to the ground with everyone inside!"

Sarah didn't speak. She stepped onto the deck, her white sundress a sharp contrast to the dark night, her weapon raised, aiming directly at his chest.

"The file is already uploading, Thorne," Sarah said, her voice carrying an absolute, permanent conviction. "Your name is on the first page. The whole world knows who you are."

Thorne snarled, raising his silver pistol.

But before he could pull the trigger, a loud, mechanical shriek echoed from the cliffs below.

Mark had climbed the steep stairs, his tactical jacket torn and covered in sea salt, but his eyes were filled with a protective fury that made him look completely invincible. He lunged forward, throwing his body into Thorne, the sheer force of the impact sending both men crashing through the wooden railing of the deck.

They fell onto the grassy lawn below, rolling in the fresh, wild blueberries as they fought for control of the weapon.

Thorne was frantic, his fingers clawing at Mark's face, but Mark was a solid wall of absolute energy. He grabbed Thorne's wrist, twisting it violently until the silver pistol clattered into the high grass.

With a final, powerful strike of his fist, Mark neutralized Thorne, sending him crashing into the dirt, unconscious and defeated.
