Chapter 23 - The Portland Safehouse

The drive to Portland was a silent, tense race against time. The rain began to fall, a steady, heavy drizzle that blurred the headlights of the oncoming traffic and slicked the coastal highway.

Sarah sat in the passenger seat, her laptop open on her knees, actively monitoring the federal secure communications. "Agent Vance’s safehouse is a registered federal property near the Old Port district. It’s an unassuming brick townhouse, but it’s supposed to have a small security detail. I’m trying to ping Vance’s personal phone, but it’s going straight to voicemail."

"They’ve likely jammed the local cellular signals," Mark said, his hands tight on the steering wheel as he navigated a sharp curve. "Standard operating procedure for a high-value assassination. They cut the target off from the world before they strike."

He pushed the accelerator down, the SUV’s engine roaring as they entered the outskirts of Portland. The city was quiet, its brick streets glistening under the yellow glow of the streetlights.

When they arrived near the Old Port townhouse, Mark parked two blocks away in a dark alley. He checked his sidearm, racking the slide with a metallic click. He handed Sarah a spare magazine.

"We go in through the rear alleyway," Mark instructed. "Keep your eyes moving. If you see anything suspicious, you shoot first and ask questions later. Understand?"

Sarah nodded, her breathing shallow but controlled. "I’m ready."

They slipped through the rain-soaked streets, moving like ghosts between the historic brick buildings. The alley behind the safehouse was dark, illuminated only by a single flickering security light.

As they approached the back door, Mark spotted a dark puddle on the wet asphalt. He knelt down, touching the liquid, then looked at his fingers. It was blood.

Following the trail, he found the body of a federal marshal slumped behind a dumpster, his weapon still in his holster. He had been shot twice in the chest with a suppressed weapon.

"We’re too late," Sarah whispered, her hand covering her mouth.

"No," Mark said, his eyes scanning the building. "The blood is fresh. It hasn't fully coagulated in the rain. They’re still inside."

Mark approached the rear door, which was slightly ajar. He pushed it open with his boot, his weapon raised. The interior of the townhouse was dark and dead silent. The smell of gunpowder and copper hung heavy in the air.

They moved through the kitchen and into the main living area. Another marshal lay dead near the stairs.

Suddenly, a floorboard creaked above them.

Mark signaled to Sarah to stay low. He began to ascend the stairs, his movements completely silent. As he reached the landing, a figure stepped out of the shadows, raised a weapon, and fired.

Mark dived forward, the bullet shattering the wooden bannister where his head had been a second before. He rolled onto his back, firing three rapid shots. The shooter fell backward with a heavy thud, his weapon clattering down the stairs.

Mark scrambled to his feet and rushed into the master bedroom.

Inside, Agent Marcus Vance was pinned to the floor, a large, muscular assassin holding a knife to his throat, using the wounded federal agent as a human shield.

"Drop the gun!" the assassin screamed, his eyes wild. "Drop it or I open his throat right now!"

Vance was bleeding from a gunshot wound to his shoulder, his face pale with shock. "Don't... don't let him leave, Thorne..." he gasped, his voice cracking.

Mark held his weapon steady, his sights aligned perfectly with the sliver of the assassin's head visible behind Vance’s shoulder. The margin for error was less than an inch.

"You have no way out of this building," Mark said, his voice incredibly calm, a stark contrast to the high-stakes tension of the room. "The police are already on their way. If you kill him, you die next. If you drop the knife, you live to see a courtroom."

"I don't care about a courtroom!" the man yelled. "Arthur Sterling pays his debts, and he pays for results!"

Before the assassin could pull the blade, Sarah appeared in the doorway. She didn't hesitate. She fired a single, precise shot from her compact pistol, striking the assassin in the shoulder.

The impact caused the man to flinch, his grip on Vance loosening.

In that split second, Mark fired. His bullet struck the assassin in the center of his forehead. The man collapsed instantly, lifeless.

Mark rushed forward, kicking the knife away, while Sarah knelt beside Agent Vance, applying pressure to his shoulder wound with a clean towel she found in the bathroom.

"I’ve got you, Vance," Sarah said, her voice filled with gentle urgency. "Hold on."

Vance groaned, looking up at Mark and Sarah with profound gratitude. "You... you saved my life. They... they knew I had the decrypted files that linked Arthur Sterling directly to the offshore accounts. They wanted to destroy the hard drives."

Mark looked at the desk in the corner of the room. A military-grade portable server was plugged into Vance’s laptop, its lights flashing.

"Did they get the data?" Mark asked.

"No," Vance whispered. "The download... it’s complete. It’s on that encrypted drive. It contains the proof of Arthur’s direct authorization of the mercenary hits. It’s the final nail in his coffin."

Mark walked over, unplugged the drive, and slipped it into his pocket. He then looked out the window. In the distance, the wails of police sirens were finally approaching.

"The authorities are coming, Vance," Mark said. "But we can't wait for them. Arthur Sterling knows his hit squad failed, and he’s going to run. We’re going to Newport to end this once and for all."

"Be careful," Vance warned, his voice fading as exhaustion took over. "Arthur has a private security force at that estate. It’s a fortress."

Mark looked at Sarah, his gray eyes shining with an unyielding resolve. "Then we’ll bring the fortress down."
