Chapter 15 - The Price of the Truth

Mark lifted the heavy leather lid of the suitcase. Inside lay no stacks of cash, no gold bullion, and no bearer bonds.
Instead, there was a single, highly advanced tablet device and a series of blue-bound notebooks, their pages filled with hand-written formulas, chemical diagrams, and lists of names—names that included high-ranking city officials, judges, and senior officers within the Chicago Police Department.
It was the complete blueprint of Julian Sterling’s shadow network—the ledger of bribes, blackmails, and illegal industrial sabotage that had kept him in power for three decades.
"This is the crown," Mark muttered to himself, his voice echoing hollowly in the steel room.
He packed the tablet and the notebooks into his tactical bag, slung the strap over his shoulder, and began his ascent back up the narrow maintenance shaft. Every muscle in his body screamed with exhaustion, his injured ribs throbbing in protest, but he pushed through the pain, fueled by the image of Sarah and Clara waiting in the truck.
He emerged into the sub-basement, coughing violently as his lungs drew in the dusty air of the bank.
"You are surprisingly efficient, Lieutenant Ford," a voice called out from the darkness of the vault entrance.
Mark spun around, his hand instinctively reaching for his Halligan bar.
Standing in the doorway, flanked by two men in dark tactical gear, was the man in the grey suit from the library. In his hand, he held a sleek, silver pistol fitted with a carbon fiber suppressor.
"My name is Thomas Thorne," the man said, his voice carrying that same smooth, cultured authority from the phone. "I am the chief legal counsel for the Sterling estate. Or rather, I was, before your little rescue mission destroyed my employer’s life."
"You're the one who escaped from ADX Florence with Drago's associates," Mark said, his eyes scanning the room, looking for an exit.
"Drago was a blunt instrument, useful for breaking things, but entirely lacking in... vision," Thorne sneered, taking a step forward. "The ledger you hold in your bag is worth fifty million dollars to the people whose names are written inside it. They will pay any price to ensure those pages are burned. And I am going to sell it back to them."
"And what happens to us?" Mark asked, his grip tightening on his tool.
"You and your family are the only remaining witnesses to the Sterling legacy," Thorne said, his eyes turning cold and dead. "You served your purpose by retrieving the ledger. Now, it is time for the ash to return to the earth."
Thorne raised his pistol, aiming directly at Mark's chest.
But before he could pull the trigger, the heavy steel door of the vault room shattered inward with a deafening, metallic roar.

A red-painted, high-pressure rescue airbag, inflated to its maximum capacity, had been wedged between the vault door and the concrete frame, exploding the structural hinges.
The sudden, violent shockwave sent Thorne and his men flying across the concrete floor, their weapons clattering into the darkness.
