Chapter 10 - The Last Fox in the Forest

Back at the Long Island estate, the afternoon sun melted the last patches of winter snow across the sprawling lawns, turning the damp earth green with the promise of spring.

Inside the library, the fire had burned down to glowing embers.

Emily Carter stood by the tall arched window, holding a steaming cup of tea as she watched Lily chase a butterfly across the terrace below, her laughter echoing brightly against the stone walls.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Emily turned around. Adrian Kane stood in the doorway. He had removed his suit jacket, his white shirt collar open, looking less like the syndicate lord who commanded the Eastern Seaboard and more like a man finally returning to a home he had forgotten how to inhabit.

He walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping a few feet away from her.

“You’re back early,” Emily said softly, a warm smile touching her lips.

“The council meeting was remarkably brief,” Adrian replied, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her breath catch. “It turns out when you completely rewrite the rules of an empire, people stop arguing about the details.”

Emily looked down at her teacup, then back up at him. “And the estate? And us?”

Adrian reached out. His large, steady hand gently brushed a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead—a gesture so tender, so completely devoid of the cold calculation that defined his world, that Emily felt the last remaining walls around her heart give way entirely.

“The estate is secure,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant hum. “And as for you and Lily... the guest suite is being converted.”

Emily blinked in surprise. “Converted?”

“Into a home,” Adrian said simply. “Permanently. If you are willing to accept the security detail, the kitchen upgrades, and a man who doesn't know the first thing about raising a child, but is willing to learn.”

Outside on the terrace, Lily's laughter rang out again as she chased another butterfly across the grass, her star-patterned sock flashing brightly in the sunlight.

Emily smiled, tears of pure relief welling in her eyes, and placed her hand over Adrian’s.

“We have plenty of time, Mr. Kane,” she whispered. “After all... the fox finally found his family.”

Adrian pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her with an absolute, unshakable strength, knowing that the coldest winter of his life had finally come to an end.
