Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Teddy Bear

Back at the Long Island estate, night had fallen once more, bringing with it a howling winter gale that shook the massive oak trees surrounding the property.

Inside the guest suite, Lily was fast asleep in her small white bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Emily sat at the small writing desk by the window, staring at a small, worn leather journal she had pulled from the bottom lining of her battered suitcase. It was the ledger Marcus Vance had spent three years trying to find—the one her ex-husband had used to launder millions through the Chicago Outfit before she discovered his double life and fled across state lines.

She opened the cover. Written in neat, precise ink on the first page were the routing numbers, bank codes, and encrypted transfer logs that could bring down half the criminal infrastructure in the Midwest.

She had brought it to New York because she had nowhere else to hide it. She had thought about handing it over to the FBI, but she knew too well how deep the corruption ran—federal agents could be bought just as easily as local cops.

Then she had met Adrian Kane.

The man was a monster by every legal definition—a ruthless syndicate boss who controlled the docks through fear and leverage. Yet, he had looked at her terrified daughter with gentleness, paid off her debts without asking for a single favor in return, and given them a fortress to hide in.

Can I trust him? she wondered, her fingers trembling against the aged paper. Or am I just leading another apex predator straight to our door?

Suddenly, a soft knock echoed at the suite door.

Emily froze. She quickly tucked the ledger back into the suitcase lining and hurried over to unlock the door.

Benjamin Cole stood in the hallway, his face tight with controlled urgency.

“Ms. Carter,” Benjamin said quietly. “Pack your things. Now.”

“What?” Emily whispered, her blood running cold. “What’p happening?”

“Anthony Mercer has triggered an emergency security review at the main gate,” Benjamin explained, stepping inside and locking the door behind him. “He brought an uninvited guest onto the property—a man claiming to be Marcus Vance.”

Emily gasped, pressing both hands over her mouth. “Marcus? He’s here?”

“He claims you are holding stolen property belonging to his business associates in Chicago,” Benjamin said, his eyes scanning the room with clinical precision. “Mr. Kane is currently in the main security foyer dealing with Mercer and Vance. But protocol dictates that you and the child must be moved to the safe bunker immediately.”

“Where is Mr. Kane?” Emily asked, terror gripping her chest.

“He is handling it,” Benjamin said firmly, grabbing Emily’s arm. “Bring the child. We don't have much time.”

Before Emily could turn toward Lily’s bed, the heavy double doors of the suite burst open.

Standing in the doorway, panting slightly with a wild, desperate grin on his face, was Marcus Vance. Behind him stood two heavy-set men in dark winter coats holding silenced pistols.

“Well, well, well,” Marcus sneered, stepping into the room. His eyes locked onto Emily, then drifted toward the bed where Lily was beginning to stir. “Look at domestic bliss. Running away with my ledger, Emmy? And living high on the hog in a mob boss’s mansion?”

Benjamin Cole’s hand instantly flashed beneath his jacket, drawing his firearm with lightning speed.

Before Benjamin could level his weapon, one of Marcus’s thugs stepped forward, slamming the butt of a heavy pistol against the side of Benjamin’s head. Benjamin collapsed silently onto the hardwood floor.

“Mr. Cole!” Emily screamed, rushing toward him.

Marcus grabbed Emily by her arm, yanking her back with brutal force. “Shut your mouth, bitch! Where is the book? I know you brought it into this house!”

“Let go of her!”

A voice echoed from the doorway—a voice that instantly froze the air in the room.

Marcus Vance spun around.

Adrian Kane stood in the doorway.

He didn't have a gun drawn. His hands were casually shoved into the pockets of his dark trousers. His face was entirely devoid of expression, but his dark eyes burned with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury.

“Mr. Kane,” Marcus laughed nervously, though his grip on Emily’s arm tightened. “Sorry about the mess. But this woman is my legal wife, and she’s currently harboring stolen property belonging to my associates in Chicago. Hand her and the kid over, and nobody else has to bleed tonight.”

Adrian took a slow step into the room.

“You entered my estate without authorization,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, hypnotic whisper. “You assaulted my chief of security inside my private quarters.”

“I’m taking what’s mine—”

“You are standing in my house,” Adrian interrupted, his voice rising just enough to vibrate through the floorboards. “And you are touching my employee.”

Marcus sneered, pressing the barrel of a pistol against Emily’s temple. “One move, Kane, and I blow her brains all over this wallpaper. I don’t care who you are in New York—in Chicago, we don't negotiate with—”

Thud.

Marcus never finished the sentence.

From behind Adrian, a small, sleepy voice drifted from the bed.

“Mr. Adrian? Is there a monster?”

Adrian didn't blink. With terrifying, superhuman speed, he drew a suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster and fired a single round.

The bullet shattered the weapon in Marcus Vance’s hand, tearing through the metal slide and embedding itself in the ceiling above.

Marcus screamed, clutching his bloody, mangled fingers.

Before his thugs could raise their weapons, the door behind them filled with black-clad security operatives led by Benjamin Cole—who had recovered remarkably fast from the blow to his head, wiping a streak of blood from his temple with a cold smile.

Within three seconds, both thugs were face-down on the floor, their hands zip-tied behind their backs, their weapons kicked across the room.

Marcus fell to his knees, howling in agony, clutching his bleeding hand.

Adrian walked forward, stepping over Marcus’s writhing form until he stood directly in front of Emily, who was shaking uncontrollably, her arms wrapped around Lily, who had buried her face in her mother’s waist, crying softly from the noise.

Adrian knelt down. He looked past Emily, his gaze falling upon the open suitcase on the luggage rack.

In the corner of the lining, the corner of the leather ledger was visible.

Adrian looked up at Emily. Their eyes met.

There was no judgment in his gaze. Only an infinite, dark understanding.

“Is that what they came for?” Adrian asked softly.

Emily swallowed hard, her voice trembling. “Yes. It’s... it’s the truth about what Marcus did in Chicago. I brought it because I didn't know where else to run.”

Adrian stood up slowly. He walked over to the suitcase, reached down, pulled the leather ledger from its hiding place, and tossed it casually onto the desk behind him.

Then he turned his attention back to Marcus Vance, who was groaning in pain on the floor.

“Anthony Mercer told me you were looking for your ex-wife,” Adrian said, his voice as cold as the winter wind outside. “He told me you had unfinished business.”

“Kane... please,” Marcus sobbed, clutching his bleeding hand. “Just let us go. Mercer set this up! He’s the one who gave us the security codes!”

Adrian stopped. His eyes narrowed. “Mercer?”

“Yes! Anthony Mercer!” Marcus babbled frantically. “He wanted you ruined! He said if we took the ledger and made a scene in your house, the council would strip your command!”

Adrian’s silence was heavier than any shout.

He turned slowly toward Benjamin Cole. “Where is Mercer?”

May you like

“Waiting in the ground-floor security office,” Benjamin replied, his voice hard as iron. “He thought we were all tied up dealing with the breach.”

“Bring him to the library,” Adrian ordered quietly. “And bring Marcus and his associates as well. We are going to have a family meeting.”
