Chapter 9 - The Crimson Sunrise

The morning air over Manhattan was crisp and biting as Adrian Kane’s private town car glided across the Triborough Bridge. In the back seat, Adrian sat in silence, adjusting the cuffs of his dark tailored suit. Beside him sat Benjamin Cole, his briefcase resting securely on his knees.

“The council is assembling at the downtown headquarters,” Benjamin reported, glancing at his tablet. “The remaining captains from the New Jersey and Brooklyn factions are waiting in the main boardroom. They want reassurance on the leadership transition following Mercer’s departure.”

Adrian looked out the tinted window at the gleaming Manhattan skyline, the glass towers reflecting the pale orange glow of dawn.

“Reassurance is for men who doubt their position, Benjamin,” Adrian said quietly. “I am not asking for their approval. I am informing them of the new terms.”

“And the federal task force?”

“Let them investigate,” Adrian replied, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. “Marcus Vance and his associates provided enough financial records to keep the federal prosecutors busy in Chicago for the next decade. As for our operations, every shell company has been restructured under legitimate philanthropic holdings managed directly by Vance-Sterling assets. The empire is clean.”

Benjamin allowed himself a rare, approving nod. “It appears the domestic arrangement brought unexpected clarity to our logistics.”

“It brought something far rarer,” Adrian murmured, staring at his reflection in the glass.

When the car pulled up to the limestone-facade headquarters in downtown Manhattan, a dozen security operatives stood at attention by the double doors. But Adrian did not feel the usual cold detachment that had defined his rise to power. For the first time in twenty years, his mind wasn't entirely consumed by risk matrices, leverage, or survival.

It was anchored to a kitchen table in Long Island, where a little girl in yellow pajamas was waiting for her pancakes.
