Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Ledger

The following morning, the winter sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Long Island Sound, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns of the Kane estate.

Inside the second-floor guest suite, Emily Carter was frantically organizing the small kitchenette while Lily sat cross-legged on the plush Persian rug, coloring inside a thick Disney book that had mysteriously appeared on the nightstand alongside a brand-new box of Crayola crayons.

“Mommy, look! I made the duck blue!” Lily called out, holding up the page with a proud smile.

“It’s beautiful, sweetheart,” Emily replied, though her hands were shaking as she folded a stack of freshly laundered towels.

She still couldn't process what had happened last night. After Mr. Kane had ordered them moved to the private executive suite, a private physician had arrived within twenty minutes—a distinguished older man in a charcoal suit who had examined Lily’s lingering cough, administered a gentle vitamin syrup, and left behind two bags of organic groceries and fresh infant medicine without charging a single penny.

Then, at six o'clock this morning, a delivery had arrived at their door: three identical sets of professional housekeeping uniforms in Emily’s exact size, along with warm winter coats, boots, and a handwritten note instructing her to report to the main laundry office at seven-thirty.

There was no threat. There was no dismissal slip. Just cold, absolute, overwhelming organization.

“Good morning, Ms. Carter.”

Emily jumped, dropping a hand towel onto the floor.

Benjamin Cole stood in the open doorway of the suite. He wore his customary dark suit, his hands clasped neatly behind his back.

“Mr. Cole,” Emily breathed, pressing a hand against her chest. “I—I’m sorry, I was just getting ready for my shift—”

“There is no need to rush,” Benjamin said calmly, stepping into the room and glancing down at Lily, who was busy coloring a yellow sun. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook. “Mr. Kane has revised your duties.”

Emily’s heart seized. “Revised? Am I being demoted? Or... or transferred to the outer grounds?”

“You are being reassigned to the west wing permanent staff,” Benjamin stated, watching her reaction closely. “Your duties will consist exclusively of maintaining the master study, the private library, and Mr. Kane’s personal quarters. You will report directly to him when summoned.”

Emily stared at him in utter disbelief. The west wing was strictly off-limits to ninety-nine percent of the estate’s fifty-person staff. Housekeepers assigned to that section were historically subjected to rigorous NDA agreements and monitored by closed-circuit cameras twenty-four hours a day.

“Why?” Emily whispered. “Why me? I’m just... I’m a general cleaner from Chicago. I don’t have high-end estate experience.”

“Mr. Kane values discretion above all else,” Benjamin replied smoothly, though his eyes held a sharp, analytical glint. “And he noted your attention to detail during last night’s unexpected... interaction.”

Before Emily could respond, the heavy mahogany door swung open further, and Adrian Kane walked into the room.

He had just finished a morning workout; he wore a dark charcoal crewneck sweater and black athletic trousers. Without his suit jacket, his broad shoulders and commanding physical presence seemed even more overwhelming inside the cozy confines of the guest suite.

Lily stopped coloring. She looked up from her book, her wide gray eyes locking onto Adrian.

“Mr. Adrian!” she announced cheerfully, as though greeting an old friend rather than a man who controlled half the criminal underworld on the Eastern Seaboard.

Adrian paused. He looked down at the child, then glanced at Emily, whose face had turned pale with apprehension.

“Did you sleep well, Lily?” Adrian asked.

Emily nearly dropped her coffee mug. He used her first name. In the entire history of the estate, no employee had ever heard Adrian Kane address anyone below executive rank by their given name, let alone a three-year-old child of a domestic worker.

“My bed is fluffy like a cloud,” Lily declared, standing up and walking over to Adrian’s side. Without a trace of fear, she reached out and tugged on the hem of his dark sweater. “Can I have pancakes today? Mommy says we have to eat toast, but toast is boring.”

Adrian looked down at the small hand gripping his sweater. He slowly knelt down so that he was eye-level with the little girl.

“Toast builds character,” Adrian said deadpan.

“Character tastes like cardboard,” Lily retorted instantly.

Benjamin Cole turned his head away to cough, though the faint twitch at the corner of his mouth suggested he was suppressing an absolute roar of laughter.

Adrian stared at the child for three long seconds. Then, a microscopic shift occurred in the rigid corners of his mouth.

“Pancakes,” Adrian said quietly. “With maple syrup. But only if you finish your milk.”

“Deal!” Lily chirped, holding out her tiny pink-painted pinky finger.

Adrian looked at the tiny finger, then slowly extended his large, scarred index finger and hooked it with hers—a solemn, unbreakable contract forged between the most feared syndicate boss in America and a toddler in yellow pajamas.

Emily stood frozen against the kitchen counter, her world tilting entirely off its axis.

Who is this man? she thought. And what does he actually want with us?
