Chapter 2 - The Whispers of Long Island Sound

Three floors below, inside the sprawling, high-security bunker that served as the nerve center of Adrian Kane’s empire, Anthony Mercer was pacing a path into the imported Turkish carpet.

“He canceled the Brooklyn dock handover,” Mercer muttered, slamming his palm against the stainless-steel monitoring desk. “Do you realize what that shipment represents, Benjamin? That container holds twelve million in uncut electronics routing through European shell companies, not to mention the leverage we hold over the port authority commissioners.”

Benjamin Cole poured himself a cup of black coffee from the side station, his expression entirely unreadable. He took a slow sip before answering.

“Mr. Kane made his instructions clear,” Benjamin said evenly.

“Mr. Kane just disrupted a six-month logistical chain because a three-year-old girl wandered into a board meeting wearing mismatched socks!” Mercer snapped, his face flushing a mottled red. He leaned over the desk, lowering his voice into a conspiratorial hiss. “Something is wrong with him, Benjamin. Ever since the old estate burned down five years ago, he’s been slipping. He’s getting soft. First, he stops the expansion into New Jersey; now, he’s playing babysitter to domestic staff.”

Benjamin set his coffee cup down with a soft, deliberate clink. He turned his gray, piercing eyes toward Mercer.

“If I were you, Anthony, I would choose my words with extreme mathematical precision,” Benjamin warned, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only the terrifying weight of absolute certainty. “You have worked under Mr. Kane for twelve years. You know what happens to men who mistake focus for softness.”

Mercer sneered, though he took a half-step back. “I’m just saying—the council in Manhattan isn’t going to wait around while Adrian plays domestic hero. The Italian syndicates are already probing our northern distribution lines in Westchester. If we look unstable, the whole house of cards comes down.”

“The house of cards does not fall because of a child, Anthony,” a cold voice echoed from the shadows of the arched doorway.

Mercer spun around.

Adrian Kane stepped out from the private elevator hallway. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his white shirt sleeves to reveal the thick, corded muscle of his forearms. His expression was a glacier—smooth, impassive, and lethal.

“Boss,” Mercer choked out, smoothing his lapels with a nervous twitch of his fingers. “We were just... discussing the timeline for the Brooklyn freight.”

“I heard the discussion,” Adrian said, walking slowly toward the center of the room. He stopped two feet away from Mercer, towering over him by several inches. “You are worried about the Italians in Westchester?”

“Well, naturally, sir. They’ve been—"

“Let them probe,” Adrian interrupted softly. “While they are looking at Westchester, our primary transport is already clearing the customs checkpoint in Baltimore under a secondary maritime flag. You spent four days worrying about the front door while I was already redesigning the foundation.”

Mercer swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “I... I didn’t realize, sir.”

“You rarely realize anything until it has already cost you money, Anthony,” Adrian said, turning his back on him and walking over to the main holographic display terminal. He tapped the glass surface, bringing up a detailed architectural schematic of the estate’s west wing.

“I want perimeter sensors upgraded on the secondary service elevator,” Adrian ordered, his voice dropping into operational command mode. “And I want a full, unredacted background check on Emily Carter placed on my desk by eight o'clock tomorrow morning.”

Benjamin raised an eyebrow slightly. “You suspect her?”

“I suspect everyone,” Adrian replied without turning around. “A single mother with no local history, arriving in New York right as the federal task force ramps up its surveillance on my shipping firms? It’s either a remarkably convenient coincidence or an expertly planted asset.”

“Shall I have security relocate her off-site?” Benjamin asked.

Adrian stared at the glowing blue schematic of the guest suite where Lily was currently sleeping. For a brief second, the image of the little girl clutching his silk tie flashed through his mind.

“No,” Adrian said coldly. “Keep her close. If she’s a spy, I want to watch her every move. If she’s just an unfortunate soul caught in the gears, she stays where I can see her.”

“Understood,” Benjamin nodded. “And the Carter woman’s financial records?”

“Run them through the offshore accounts in the Caymans. If she has debts, find out who bought them. I want to know every person who has ever had leverage over Emily Carter.”
