Chapter 1 - The Five-Minute Mark

The digital clock on my car’s dashboard ticked from 2:14 PM to 2:15 PM.
Five minutes.
I sat motionless in the driver’s seat of my SUV, watching the glass reflection of the Carter Logistics corporate headquarters towering sixty stories into the grey sky. My scalp felt raw, burning where Vanessa Brooks had grabbed handfuls of my hair in the executive suite restroom, wielding a heavy pair of fabric shears she had snatched from the branding department’s display board. Clumps of my dark, shoulder-length hair still littered the shoulders of my beige trench coat like dead leaves.
My phone screen flickered again. A follow-up text from my attorney, Arthur Vance: “The judge signed the freeze on all joint liquid assets at 2:12 PM. The temporary restraining order and corporate audit demand are filed. The bailiffs are en route to the Carter Building now.”
I took a deep, steady breath, placed my hands on the steering wheel, and looked into the rearview mirror.
The woman staring back at me had jagged, unevenly chopped tufts of hair, a red scratch running along her left jawline, and eyes devoid of tears. For eight years, I had been the quiet foundation behind Daniel Carter’s success. I had edited his pitch decks when he was a mid-level director; I had managed his public image when he took over Carter Logistics; I had quietly tolerated his late nights, his growing distance, and the icy silence that filled our suburban mansion.
I had loved him. But love built on a lie is just a house made of glass, and Vanessa Brooks had just thrown a boulder through it.
My phone rang. The screen displayed Daniel.
I didn't answer. I let it ring until it went to voicemail, then watched as he immediately called again. On the third ring, I tapped the speaker button, keeping my voice as smooth as polished marble.
"Your five minutes expired thirty seconds ago, Daniel."
"Emily, where the hell are you?!" Daniel’s voice boomed through the car speakers, laced with a mix of annoyance and rising panic. "I’m standing in the lobby! Security said you drove off! Look, what happened upstairs was out of hand—Vanessa lost her mind, okay? I’m handling it. I’ve already suspended her for the week. But you can't be calling my cell making ridiculous threats about attorney offices!"
"Suspended her for a week," I repeated softly. "She physically assaulted your wife in your corporate restroom, forcibly cut off my hair, and your response is a paid vacation?"
"She was emotional!" Daniel snapped, though his tone carried an undercurrent of hesitation. "She’s under a lot of stress with the quarterly merger! Emily, don't do this. Come home. We’ll talk about this like adults tonight. I’ll fire her next month once the board approves the acquisition of Apex Hauling, alright? Just... go home."
"Look out your lobby window, Daniel."
A pause on the line. "What?"
"Look out the front glass doors."
Through my windshield, I saw Daniel’s tall, tailored figure emerge from the inner elevators and walk toward the grand glass entrance of the Carter Logistics building. He held his phone to his ear, his silk tie slightly askew, looking around the plaza with a frown.
At that exact moment, two white sedans carrying county sheriff markings pulled up to the curb directly in front of the building. Four uniformed officers and two process servers stepped out, carrying thick leather binders and sealed legal envelopes.
"Emily... what is this?" Daniel whispered into the phone, his body going visibly rigid as the officers walked straight past the front desk security and approached him.
"That is the end of your five minutes, Daniel," I said calmly. "And the beginning of your nightmare."
Through the glass, I watched as the lead process server handed Daniel a thick stack of legal documents. Even from thirty yards away, I could see the color drain completely from his face.
"Mr. Daniel Carter?" the process server's voice boomed softly across the plaza. "You are hereby served with an emergency court injunction freezing all corporate expansion accounts, an immediate court-ordered forensic audit of Carter Logistics, and a temporary protective order filed on behalf of Emily Carter."
Daniel’s phone dropped an inch from his ear. "Wait... freeze my accounts? On what grounds?!"
"On the grounds that forty percent of Carter Logistics was funded by my late father’s estate," I said through the phone line, my voice cutting through his panic like a knife. "And on the grounds that you have been siphoning corporate funds into a private LLC registered under the name of Vanessa Brooks."
Daniel’s head snapped toward the parking lot, his eyes frantically searching the row of cars until they locked onto my SUV.

"Emily... no," he stammered, stepping away from the officers, his voice cracking. "Emily, wait! Let me explain!"
I rolled up my window, put the car in drive, and pulled out into the afternoon traffic without looking back.
