Chapter 5 - The Clean Sweep

The following Monday morning at 8:00 AM, the atmosphere inside the corporate headquarters of Carter Logistics was tense enough to snap a wire.

Word of Vanessa Brooks’s sudden termination and the emergency weekend board meeting had leaked through the executive suites like wildfire. Rumors were circulating that a major corporate restructuring was underway, but no one knew the full extent of the storm that was about to hit.

At 8:30 AM, the private executive elevator doors opened on the top floor.

I stepped out onto the marble floor.

I was no longer wearing the trench coat or hiding my appearance. Over the weekend, I had visited a master hair stylist who had transformed my ruined, jagged locks into a sharp, sophisticated platinum-tinted pixie cut that accentuated my high cheekbones and fierce grey eyes. I wore a perfectly tailored emerald-green suit and three-inch black heels that clicked with absolute authority against the stone floor.

Beside me walked Arthur Vance and Maya Lin, followed by three independent corporate auditors carrying heavy black briefcases.

The receptionist, a young woman who had seen me humiliated in the hallway four days ago, froze when she saw me. She stood up quickly, her face pale.

"Mrs. Carter... good morning," she stammered. "Mr. Carter is in his office... he didn't expect you here so early."

"It’s Ms. Carter now," I corrected her gently, offering a polite, professional smile. "And this is no longer Mr. Carter’s office. Please call an immediate all-hands meeting in the main auditorium for 9:00 AM."

"A-all hands?" she blinked. "Including department heads?"

"Including everyone," I said, passing her desk without slowing down.

I walked straight to the corner CEO suite—the massive office with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city skyline.

I pushed the double doors open without knocking.

Daniel was sitting behind his massive mahogany desk, staring blankly at a cold cup of coffee. He looked like he hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His eyes were bloodshot, his skin was sallow, and his desk was littered with legal notices and financial spreadsheets.

He looked up as I walked in, his eyes widening slightly as he took in my new appearance.

"Emily..." he murmured, standing up slowly. "You... you cut your hair."

"I reclaimed it," I replied, walking over to the large glass window and looking out over the city. "Just like I’m reclaiming this company."

"Look, Emily," Daniel said, walking around his desk, trying to adopt a persuasive, warm tone that he used to use whenever he wanted to smooth things over after coming home late. "The Apex acquisition went through smoothly this morning thanks to the escrow release. The market opened up two points. We saved the deal. Now that Vanessa is gone, we can get back to normal. I’ve already contacted a marriage counselor—"

I turned around, holding up a sleek black folder.

"There is no 'normal,' Daniel," I interrupted, my voice dropping into an icy register. "And there is no marriage counseling. This folder contains your formal six-month probationary executive contract. As the sixty-percent majority shareholder and newly appointed Chairwoman of the Board, I am restructuring executive operations."

Daniel blinked, horrified. "Chairwoman of the Board?! What are you talking about? The board hasn't voted on that!"

"The board voted at 7:00 AM this morning in an emergency digital session," Arthur Vance stepped forward, handing Daniel an official copy of the board resolution. "Given that Ms. Carter now controls sixty percent of the voting equity, her vote alone constitutes a statutory majority. The board has formally ratified her appointment as Chairwoman, effective immediately."

Daniel grabbed the document, his hands shaking as his eyes scanned the signatures. "You... you turned my own board against me?"

"They didn't need much convincing once Maya presented the audit showing you let your assistant siphon $1.2 million out of the operational fund," I said coldly. "You have thirty minutes to clear your personal belongings out of this office, Daniel."

Daniel gasped, dropping the paper. "What?! You're kicking me out of my own office?!"

"You are being relocated to the secondary executive suite on the fourteenth floor," I stated, walking behind his desk and pulling out the leather executive chair. "Where you will oversee regional fleet maintenance under Maya Lin’s direct financial supervision. If you perform well over the next six months, we will discuss your future with Carter Logistics. If you fail, you will be terminated without a severance package."

Daniel stared at me, his chest heaving, his pride shattered into a million sharp pieces. He looked at Arthur, then at Maya, realizing that there was no exit, no loophole, and no one left in the building who was going to rescue him.

"You really hate me, don't you?" Daniel whispered, his voice laced with bitter defeat.

May you like

I sat down in the CEO chair, resting my hands flat on the polished mahogany surface, looking up at him with absolute composure.

"I don't hate you, Daniel," I said softly. "Hate requires energy. Right now, you’re just an underperforming asset that needs restructuring. You have twenty-five minutes left to pack."
