Chapter 7 - The Trap Splinters

Four days later, the storm hit Carter Logistics without warning.

It was 10:00 AM on a Thursday when six federal agents from the Department of Environmental Protection, accompanied by officers from the State Police, walked into the main lobby of our headquarters.

They carried a federal search warrant and an immediate cease-and-desist order targeting our primary Midwest distribution hub.

Within minutes, news reporters and media helicopters were circling the building.

“CARTER LOGISTICS UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR ILLEGAL HAZMAT TRANSPORT; SHARES PLUMMET 35% IN MORNING TRADING.”

The headlines flashed across every financial network in the country.

Inside the glass boardroom on the top floor, the atmosphere was chaotic. Several minor board members were panicking, shouting over one another, while Daniel sat in the corner, looking terrified, his hands over his face.

"Silence!" I commanded, slamming my hand onto the conference table.

The room quieted down immediately. Everyone turned to look at me. I sat at the head of the table, calm, composed, and completely in control.

"Emily, this is a disaster!" one of the senior board members yelled. "The DEP has seized our Midwest hub! If our shipping license is suspended, we go bankrupt in thirty days! We need to step down and accept Apex Hauling’s emergency buyout offer!"

"Buyout offer?" I raised an eyebrow. "Has Victor Sterling already made an offer?"

Right on cue, the boardroom door opened, and Victor Sterling walked in, accompanied by his legal team. He looked triumphant, walking into the room with the swagger of a conqueror arriving to claim his prize.

"Good morning, members of the board," Victor announced smoothly, buttoning his jacket. "Given the unfortunate federal indictment facing your firm, Apex Hauling is prepared to offer a distressed asset purchase. We will buy sixty percent of Carter Logistics stock at two dollars a share and assume all environmental liabilities."

Two dollars a share. It was a hostile takeover attempt designed to wipe out my equity and strip the company clean for pennies on the dollar.

Daniel stood up, his voice shaking. "Victor... you did this, didn't you? You worked with Vanessa!"

Victor laughed coldly. "It doesn't matter who worked with whom, Daniel. The paper trail shows that the indemnification clause signed by your Chairwoman, Emily Carter, makes her personally liable for all corporate compliance breaches from last quarter. Either she signs this buyout, or she goes to federal prison."

Victor walked over to where I sat, dropping a thick contract onto the glass table directly in front of me.

"Sign the company over, Emily," Victor sneered quietly, leaning down close to my ear. "Before you end up sharing a cell with your husband."

I looked down at the contract. Then I looked up at Victor Sterling, a small, amused smile breaking across my face.

"You really should have checked your sources more carefully, Victor," I said softly.

Victor frowned. "What?"

I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out a small remote control, and pressed the button.

The large digital display screen on the wall flickered to life. Instead of financial charts, a high-definition video recording began playing.

It showed the dim booth inside the downtown lounge from four nights ago. The audio was crystal clear.

“I don't just have information, Mr. Sterling,” Vanessa’s voice echoed through the boardroom speakers. “I have the keys to destroy Emily Carter...”

The entire boardroom watched in stunned silence as the video played out, showing Vanessa handing the thumb drive to Victor Sterling, followed by Victor offering her ten percent of the acquisition profits in exchange for conspiring to commit corporate sabotage and market manipulation.

Victor’s face drained of all color. He took a step back, staring at the screen in absolute horror. "Where... where did you get that?!"

"Did you really think Vanessa Brooks was clever enough to hide an offshore bank account without my forensic team noticing?" I asked, standing up slowly and looking down at him. "Maya Lin tracked her communications three weeks ago. We planted that thumb drive, Victor. The hazmat manifest on it was a dummy file created by our compliance team to catch whoever was trying to leak corporate intelligence."

The boardroom doors opened once more.

This time, it wasn't the DEP. It was two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by federal marshals.

"Victor Sterling?" the lead SEC agent announced, stepping forward with an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit market manipulation, corporate extortion, and insider trading."

Victor spun around, looking desperately at his lawyers, but Richard Sterling was already stepping away from his brother, holding his hands up in surrender.

As the marshals placed handcuffs around Victor’s wrists and led him out of the boardroom in full view of the news cameras waiting in the lobby, I turned my attention to Daniel, who was staring at me as if I were a ghost.

"You... you knew?" Daniel whispered, horrified. "You set this whole thing up?"

"I didn't set it up, Daniel," I corrected him gently. "I just let bad people trap themselves in their own greed."
