Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

At 8:00 PM sharp, the glass-walled boardroom of Vance & Associates felt like an interrogation chamber.
Daniel sat at the far end of the long glass table, flanked by Richard Sterling and two junior corporate lawyers. He looked haggard. His suit jacket was off, his sleeves were rolled up, and the swagger that usually defined his presence as CEO was completely gone.
Beside him sat Vanessa. She was no longer wearing Daniel’s suit jacket. She wore a simple black dress, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her eyes darting nervously around the room. She looked smaller, stripped of the unearned authority she had displayed when she held those shears against my head four hours ago.
The door opened, and I walked in, flanked by Arthur Vance and Maya Lin.
I hadn't tried to hide what Vanessa had done. I had intentionally left my hair unstyled, uneven, and jagged, revealing the raw red mark on my jaw.
The moment Daniel saw me, he flinched. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but Arthur Vance immediately raised a hand, shutting him down before a word could escape his lips.
"Sit down, Mr. Carter," Arthur commanded, taking his seat at the head of the table. "This is not a social call. This is a preliminary settlement conference prior to formal criminal and civil filings."
"Criminal filings?!" Vanessa blurted out, her voice shrill and laced with panic. "This is a civil divorce matter! Daniel said this was just about money!"
"Silence, Vanessa," Sterling barked, glaring at his client’s mistress. He turned to Arthur, clearing his throat. "Arthur, let's be reasonable here. My client acknowledges that personal boundaries were crossed today. Mr. Carter is deeply apologetic for the... incident in the executive suite."
"Incident?" I spoke up for the first time, my voice low, clear, and vibrating with intensity. I looked directly at Vanessa. "You grabbed me from behind, pinned me against a marble sink, and cut off four years of my hair while threatening to ruin my life if I didn't sign over my shares in Carter Logistics. That is not an 'incident,' Vanessa. That is felony assault, battery, and extortion."
Vanessa’s face turned bright red. "You walked into his office like you owned the place! You were holding him back from expanding the company!"
"She DOES own the place!" Arthur snapped, slamming a thick folder onto the glass table. "Emily Carter owns forty percent of the voting shares of Carter Logistics through her father’s founding trust! Your salary, your corporate car, your apartment lease in the North Tower, and the $1.2 million you illegally siphoned through V&B Creative Solutions were all paid for using her family's money!"
Daniel turned his head sharply toward Vanessa, his eyes wide with shock. "Wait... $1.2 million? What is he talking about, Vanessa?"
Vanessa stammered, her confidence completely evaporating. "Daniel... I... I submitted those invoices for marketing consulting! You signed them!"
"You presented them as third-party vendor expenses!" Daniel shouted, slamming his hand onto the table, his composure finally snapping. "You told me V&B was an agency affiliated with your brother!"
"You didn't care who owned V&B as long as she was sleeping in your hotel rooms in Paris, Daniel," I cut in coldly, leaning forward across the table. "Don't play the innocent victim now. You were too busy playing CEO to bother checking where your own company's money was going."
Richard Sterling held up his hands, trying desperately to regain control of his sinking ship. "Alright! Enough! We are here tonight because of the Apex Hauling escrow freeze. If that $30 million isn't released by 11:59 PM tomorrow, Carter Logistics will lose the acquisition, the stock will plummet twenty percent on Monday morning, and everyone in this room loses money."
Sterling looked directly at me. "Mrs. Carter, what do you want in exchange for signing the escrow release?"

I stood up, resting my hands flat on the glass table, looking down at Daniel and Vanessa like a judge delivering a sentence.
"Here are my terms," I stated with absolute clarity.
