Chapter 4 - The Demands

The silence in the boardroom was absolute.
Daniel stared at me, his eyes wide, waiting for the blow to fall.
"First," I said, pointing at Vanessa. "Vanessa Brooks will resign immediately from Carter Logistics, effective tonight. She will sign a full confession acknowledging the embezzlement of $1.2 million through V&B Creative Solutions, and she will surrender her apartment key and corporate vehicle by midnight."
"What?!" Vanessa gasped, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. "Daniel, you can't let her do this to me! I did everything for you!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel yelled, turning on her with pure, unadulterated venom. "You stole $1.2 million from my company under my nose while I was defending you to my wife! Sit down and shut your mouth!"
Vanessa shrank back into her seat, tears finally spilling over her cheeks as she realized that her powerful CEO lover was throwing her to the wolves the second his own empire was threatened.
"Second," I continued, ignoring their petty crumbling dynamic. "Daniel will transfer twenty percent of his personal voting shares in Carter Logistics to me immediately. That will give me sixty percent controlling interest in the company."
"Sixty percent?!" Sterling shouted, standing up. "That gives you absolute control over the board! You could fire Daniel as CEO tomorrow!"
"Which brings me to my third condition," I said softly, looking Daniel straight in the eye. "Daniel will remain as CEO under a six-month probationary contract, subject to my personal approval. His salary will be cut by fifty percent, with the difference redirected toward repaying the stolen funds back into the employee pension fund."
Daniel looked like he had been physically struck in the chest. "Emily... you want to take my company from me?"
"It was never just your company, Daniel," I reminded him coldly. "My father founded the original fleet. I let you put your name on the door because I believed in you. You proved to me that you were nothing more than a thief in a tailored suit."
"And what if I say no?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with anger. "What if I walk out that door right now and take my chances with the board?"
Arthur Vance stepped forward, pulling a thin tablet from his briefcase and tapping the screen.
"If you walk out that door, Mr. Carter," Arthur said, "we immediately file criminal charges against Miss Brooks for grand larceny and felony assault. We file a civil lawsuit against you personally for breach of fiduciary duty. And I personally telephone the lead board members of Apex Hauling and inform them that their potential CEO is currently under investigation for corporate embezzlement."
Daniel slumped back into his leather chair, staring at the polished table. The reality of his situation closed in around him like a iron trap. He had spent eight years building an image of untouchable corporate perfection, and in less than six hours, that image had been completely shredded.
"If I sign..." Daniel’s voice was barely audible. "Will you release the Apex escrow account?"
"The moment all documents are executed and Vanessa is escorted from the building by security," I replied.
Daniel closed his eyes, took a long, ragged breath, and reached for the silver fountain pen resting beside his legal notepad.
"Daniel, no!" Vanessa cried out, reaching for his arm. "Don't do it! She's destroying us!"
Daniel shoved her hand away with such force she nearly lost her balance. "You destroyed us the second you touched those scissors, Vanessa! Get out of my sight!"
Five minutes later, the signatures were recorded.
Vanessa was escorted out of the building by Vance & Associates' private security team, her belongings packed into a single cardboard box, weeping loudly as she was marched toward a waiting taxi.
Daniel signed the share transfer documents with a trembling hand, forfeiting the majority control of the empire he had spent a decade building.
When he finished, he looked up at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of bitter regret and haunting realization. "Are you happy now, Emily?"
May you like
I picked up my leather handbag, looking down at my ruined husband with neither happiness nor anger—only cold, unshakeable freedom.
"I’m not happy, Daniel," I said softly. "I’m just getting started."
