Chapter 2 - Into the Lion’s Den

The car crossed the Brooklyn Bridge under the cover of torrential darkness. We didn't head toward the opulent penthouses of Manhattan where high-society criminals usually hid their wealth. Instead, the driver took us deep into the glass-and-steel monoliths of the Hudson Yards waterfront—a sprawling, ultra-modern private estate overlooking the harbor.

The estate, known as The Glass Citadel, was a compound of reinforced glass, matte black steel, and high-end security measures. Automated security gates scanned our vehicle three times before allowing us entry.

“Welcome to my home, Elena,” Dante said, stepping out first and extending a hand to help me out.

I looked at his outstretched hand. His fingers were long, calloused, and strong. I took it, feeling the warmth and massive strength in his grip, though I let go the moment my feet touched the polished stone driveway.

“It looks like a fortress,” I noted, looking up at the towering floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the storm-tossed Hudson River.

“It is a fortress,” Dante replied, gesturing for me to follow him inside. “In my business, luxury without security is just a target. Here, you are safe. From the Carusos, from the media, and most importantly, from your family.”

Inside, the penthouse was breathtaking. Minimalist luxury dominated the architecture: dark walnut floors, floating marble staircases, soft warm ambient lighting, and panoramic views of the glowing city skyline. But what caught my eye was the central office—a glass-enclosed room filled with financial terminals, dual-screen trading monitors, and wall maps tracing global shipping lanes.

“This is where I work,” Dante said, noticing where my eyes landed. “And as of tonight, it’s where you work.”

“I haven’t agreed to be your strategist yet,” I said coldly, turning to face him. “My father gave you my body in a contract, but my mind remains my own.”

Dante chuckled, a low rumble in his chest that vibrated through the room. He walked toward a private bar, poured two fingers of amber liquid into a tumbler, and turned back to face me.

“Elena, if I wanted a subservient trophy wife, I could have chosen from dozens of women in this city who would gladly trade their freedom for my black card,” Dante said, his gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute sincerity. “I bought your contract because you are the only person in New York who calculated the shipping route efficiencies through the St. Lawrence Seaway three years ago—a play that single-handedly doubled Romano Continental’s valuation.”

I blinked, surprised. “You read my white paper?”

“I memorized it,” Dante corrected. “Your father used you. He took your intellect, rebranded it as his own, and the moment a doctor told him you couldn’t produce an heir to inherit his precious legacy, he discarded you like trash. I don’t care about heirs, Elena. I build empires that outlive bloodlines.”

He walked over, setting the glass on the table near me.

“In this house, you are not a pawn. You are the King’s Bishop. You will have full access to my financial servers, total autonomy over Vance Logistics, and fifty percent voting share in every venture we undertake together.”

I searched his face for any sign of deception, but his pale eyes were clear, steady, and sharp.

“And what do you expect from me in return?” I asked softly.

“I expect you to help me burn Victor Romano’s empire to the ground,” Dante replied without hesitation. “And when the ash settles, I expect you to take your place beside me as the rightful ruler of this city’s trade.”

A thrill—dangerous, sharp, and terrifying—shot through my veins. For twelve years, I had bled for my father, only to be branded worthless. Now, the most dangerous man in New York was offering me the hammer to smash my own cage.

“I need my own room,” I said, keeping my composure. “And I need full administrative rights to your network by morning.”

Dante’s mouth curved into a real, wicked smile. “Your suite is upstairs, second door to the left. The server login credentials are already on your nightstand. Sleep well, partner.”
