Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

By Friday morning, the war was accelerating, but a new piece of the puzzle emerged.

While analyzing the decrypted files from Uncle Raymond’s seized port servers, I stumbled upon a hidden transaction log dating back five years. It wasn't just a simple embezzlement scheme; it was a massive, systematic siphon of Romano Continental’s offshore reserves—totaling over $140 million.

“Dante, look at this,” I called out, zooming in on the bank routing codes.

Dante came over, leaning down over my chair. His hand rested on the back of my seat, his chest brushing against my shoulder. “What did you find?”

“This money wasn't just stolen by Raymond,” I pointed out, indicating two digital signatures required to authorize the transfers. “It required an executive override signature. My father’s private key was used for every transaction.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed. “Victor was stealing from his own company?”

“No,” I said, digging deeper into the audit trails. “Victor didn't sign these. The IP addresses used to log into his account originated from my mother’s private villa in East Hampton.”

The full picture finally materialized in all its ugly glory.

Lucille Romano and Uncle Raymond had been sleeping together for years, quietly bleeding the family business dry. They had set up shell corporations in the Bahamas to hide the stolen millions. But six months ago, I had begun designing a centralized automated accounting system for Romano Continental—a system that would have automatically flagged these unauthorized transfers within weeks of going live.

They didn't just frame me because of a broken bloodline or an engagement.

They framed me because I was days away from uncovering their treason.

If they declared me infertile and mentally unstable from the shock, stripping me of my corporate clearance, my automated accounting system would be discarded—and my father would remain completely oblivious to the fact that his wife and brother were robbing him blind while driving him into an early grave.

“My father doesn't even know,” I said, the realization washing over me. “He thinks he’s protecting the family dynasty, but he’s being manipulated by the two people he trusts most.”

Dante’s jaw set into a firm, deadly line. He placed both hands on my shoulders, squeezing gently.

“Then we don't just destroy them financially, Elena,” Dante said fiercely. “We expose them in front of the entire Syndicate. The High Council of Families meets this Sunday at the Plaza Hotel for the annual Commerce Summit. Every major family from Boston to Philadelphia will be there.”

“The Summit,” I mused, a cold smile forming on my face. “It’s where my father planned to formally announce the handoff of the river rights to you.”

“Then that is where we execute our checkmate,” Dante declared.
