Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Romanos

The screens changed.

Detailed forensic accounting spreadsheets populated the screens, highlighting $140 million in stolen funds over five years, complete with IP addresses, offshore bank numbers, and digital signatures belonging to Lucille Romano and Raymond Romano.

“Five years,” I said, looking directly at my father, whose hands were shaking violently as he stared at the evidence of his wife and brother’s utter betrayal. “They bled your company dry, Dad. And when I designed the accounting system that would have caught them, they paid Ferris to fabricate a medical lie so they could strip me of my power, sell me to Dante Vance, and cover their tracks.”

“You... you monsters...” Victor choked out, turning to Raymond.

“Victor, listen to me, it’s not what it looks like!” Raymond stammered, backing away toward the wall.

Suddenly, federal agents in dark suits burst through the side doors of the ballroom, led by the lead SEC investigator I had anonymously fed the port evidence to three days prior.

“Raymond Romano! Lucille Romano!” the lead agent announced, pulling out handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and customs tax evasion!”

Lucille screamed as the agents grabbed her wrists, snapping the steel cuffs into place over her velvet sleeves. She turned to me, her face twisted in pure, ugly hatred.

“You ungrateful bitch!” Lucille spat, struggling against the officers. “We gave you everything! You were supposed to serve this family!”

“I built this family,” I corrected coldly, stepping close to her as the agents pulled her away. “And today, I tore it down.”

Raymond was tackled to the floor by two federal marshals as he attempted to reach a concealed firearm, his cries for help ignored by every mob boss in the room. In our world, stealing from your own family was a death sentence to your reputation; nobody moved a finger to help them.

When the chaos cleared and the agents dragged Lucille, Raymond, and Dr. Ferris out of the ballroom, only my father remained standing by his table, looking like a broken old man surrounded by the wreckage of his arrogance.

Victor looked at me, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. He took a staggering step forward, reaching out a trembling hand.

“Elena...” he wept quietly. “My God... what have I done to you? Please... forgive me, my daughter...”

I looked at the man who had traded me away without a fight, who had believed I was worthless the moment he thought I couldn't produce an heir.

May you like

“I saved your life by exposing them, Victor,” I said, my voice devoid of anger, left only with an absolute, quiet finality. “But you chose to treat me as merchandise. You don't have a daughter anymore.”

I turned my back on him. I slipped my hand into Dante’s strong, warm palm. He squeezed my hand tightly, his icy gray eyes filled with pride and devotion. Together, we walked out of the ballroom, leaving the ruins of the Romano dynasty behind us forever.
