Chapter 3 - THE TOXIN IN THE BLOOD

The private room on the ninth floor of Cedars-Sinai Hospital was clinical, bright, and filled with the steady, rhythmic beep of heart monitors.

Ethan sat on the edge of the hospital bed, a thick IV line inserted into the back of his hand. Across the room, in a small pediatric bed decorated with cartoon sheets, Sophie lay sleeping, her tiny arm hooked up to a specialized pediatric chelation therapy drip designed to safely flush heavy metals from a toddler's bloodstream.

Dr. Richard Vance—Ethan’s personal physician and a world-renowned toxicologist—stepped into the room, holding a stack of digital lab results. His face was grave.

"How is she, Richard?" Ethan asked immediately, his voice raw.

"Sophie is going to be completely fine, Ethan," Dr. Vance said quickly, providing immediate relief. "We caught it in the early stages. The thallium levels in her system are low enough that the three-day chelation course will flush it completely without any permanent organ damage or neurological impact. She's resilient. Her body is responding wonderfully."

Ethan let out a long, shuddering breath, resting his face in his hands. "Thank God... thank God."

"However," Dr. Vance continued, his tone darkening, "we need to talk about your bloodwork."

Ethan looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "How bad is it?"

"Vanessa was far more aggressive with you than she was with Sophie," Vance revealed, pulling up a chair beside Ethan’s bed. "Your blood panel shows elevated levels of chronic digitalis toxicity combined with trace amounts of lead. Digitalis is a cardiac medication. In small, daily doses given to a healthy person, it causes gradual heart muscle weakness, fatigue, severe anxiety, and eventually a fatal arrhythmia that looks like a natural massive heart attack."

Ethan squeezed his eyes shut. "The daily protein shakes she made for me after my morning runs."

"Exactly," Vance nodded. "If you had continued ingesting it for another month, your heart would have stopped during one of your workouts. You would have died of 'natural heart failure,' leaving Vanessa as the sole executor of your entire estate, the legal guardian of Sophie, and the owner of your company's controlling shares."

"She planned it down to the day," Ethan whispered.

"She's a sociopath of rare intelligence," Dr. Vance said bitterly. "Detective Kane told me they found three different offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under an alias she created two years ago—before she even met you. She targeted you, Ethan. Your marriage wasn't a romance; it was a planned corporate takeover with murder as the final closing deal."

A soft knock sounded at the door. Detective Kane stepped inside, holding a thick Manila file.

"Mr. Bennett," Kane said. "We just finished executing a search warrant on Vanessa’s private storage unit in Santa Monica."

Ethan looked at the detective. "What did you find?"

Kane laid three photographs on the tray table in front of Ethan.

The first photograph showed a series of surveillance photos of Ethan’s first wife, Clara, taken months before her death in a car accident four years ago.

The second photograph showed a copy of Clara’s vehicle maintenance records from the garage where her car was serviced the week before her fatal crash.

The third photograph was a picture of a man in a leather jacket standing outside Clara’s garage—a man who was currently listed as Vanessa’s brother, a former mechanic named Carter Sterling.

Ethan’s heart stopped beating. The room seemed to plunge into absolute freezing coldness.

"Clara..." Ethan choked out, his voice cracking violently. "Clara's accident... was that her too?"

"We're opening a homicide investigation into your first wife's death tonight, Ethan," Kane said solemnly. "It appears Vanessa didn't just target you after Clara died. She cleared the way so she could marry you."
