Chapter 7 - THE TRIBUNAL OF JUSTICE

Two months later.

The downtown Los Angeles Superior Courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of news vans, satellite trucks, and reporters from across the nation. The "Malibu Black Widow Trial" had become the highest-profile criminal proceeding in California history.

Inside Courtroom 402, the gallery was packed to absolute capacity.

Ethan sat in the front row of the prosecution's side, wearing a immaculate navy suit. Sitting beside him was his legal team and Dr. Vance.

Across the room, sitting at the defense table in a dull orange prison jumpsuit, sat Vanessa Bennett.

Without her designer dresses, high-end makeup, and styled hair, Vanessa looked hollow, gaunt, and visibly aged. Her manicured polish was gone, replaced by bitten nails and wild, desperate eyes that darted constantly around the room. Beside her sat Carter Sterling, also in prison clothes, refusing to look at his sister.

The honorable Judge Thomas Reynolds slammed his heavy wooden gavel three times.

"Silence in the court," Judge Reynolds commanded, his authoritative voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "We are here for the final sentencing hearing in the case of the People of California versus Vanessa Bennett and Carter Sterling."

The lead prosecutor, a formidable woman named District Attorney Elena Gomez, stood up.

"Your Honor," Gomez announced, her voice ringing clear throughout the gallery. "In light of the physical evidence, the recovered toxicity journals, the digital financial trails, and the recorded confessions provided by the defendants, the State of California submits the final plea agreements."

Gomez looked directly at Vanessa, her eyes filled with cold disgust.

"Defendant Carter Sterling has entered a guilty plea to two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Attempted Murder. In exchange for full cooperation, he has been sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

Gomez turned her attention to Vanessa.

"Defendant Vanessa Bennett has been found guilty on all counts: First-Degree Murder of Julian Vance, First-Degree Murder of Clara Bennett, Attempted Murder of Ethan Bennett, Attempted Murder of Sophie Bennett, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Grand Extortion."

Judge Reynolds looked down from his bench over his half-moon spectacles at Vanessa.

"Vanessa Bennett," Judge Reynolds said, his voice cold as iron. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a human being display such total, unmitigated absence of human empathy. You brought terror, poison, and death into the homes of families who offered you love and trust. You targeted a defenseless four-year-old child with heavy metals for financial greed."

Vanessa stood up, her wrists chained to her waist belt, her voice cracking into a desperate shriek. "Your Honor! I was sick! Ethan abused me emotionally! He drove me to—"

"Silence!" Judge Reynolds thundered, slamming his gavel down so hard the sound cracked like a gunshot. "You will not utter another lie in this courtroom."

The judge leaned forward, his eyes locking onto Vanessa with absolute finality.

"I sentence you, Vanessa Bennett, to two consecutive terms of Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, plus forty-five years for the attempted murder and abuse of Sophie Bennett. You will be transferred immediately to the California Institution for Women in Frontera, where you will remain until the day you die. May God have mercy on your soul."

The courtroom erupted into cheers, applause, and emotional gasps from the gallery!

Vanessa fell back into her chair, sobbing hysterically as bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing her arms, dragging her thrashing, screaming body out through the side security door into permanent darkness.

May you like

Ethan stood up slowly. He took a long, slow breath, feeling the final lingering weight of four years of grief and deception melt away from his chest.

Justice was served.
