Chapter 6 - THE SAN PEDRO DOCKS

At 3:15 AM, the San Pedro industrial harbor was bathed in a thick, suffocating marine fog. The towering steel cranes stood like ancient iron ghosts over thousands of stacked shipping containers, while the black, oil-slicked harbor water slapped against the wooden pilings.
Inside a rusted, abandoned shipping office on Pier 42, Carter Sterling sat behind a wooden desk, checking the action on a modified semi-automatic rifle. He was thirty-five, wiry, with sunken eyes, greasy dark hair, and a jagged scar running along his jawline—a man who had spent his life doing the dirty work for his sister's ambitious cruelty.
On the desk sat a satellite phone and two passports under fake names.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the office creaked open.
Carter spun around, raising his rifle, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Who's there?!"
A single, solitary figure stepped through the swirling fog into the dim yellow light of the office's overhead bulb.
It was Ethan Bennett.
Ethan was dressed in a dark wool coat, his hands resting casually in his pockets. He walked in alone, completely unbothered by the deadly rifle pointed directly at his chest.
Carter stared in disbelief, then let out a raspy, hysterical laugh. "You... you walked in here alone? Are you completely insane, Bennett?"
"You wanted to negotiate for Vanessa, didn't you, Carter?" Ethan spoke, his voice completely steady, echoing through the empty steel room. "You threatened my daughter to get me to pull the charges. Here I am."
Carter’s eyes darted frantically past Ethan into the foggy yard. "Where are the cops? Where's your security?"
"There are no cops here, Carter," Ethan said smoothly, taking one step closer. "The LAPD is currently searching a decoy convoy in Bel-Air. I came here because I wanted to look into the eyes of the man who sabotaged my wife Clara's brakes four years ago."
Carter’s face twisted into a grotesque, arrogant grin. "Clara? Oh, man, that was easy work. Cut the hydraulic line three-quarters through, let the pressure build up on the mountain pass, and boom—no brakes on a rainy curve. Vanessa paid me fifty grand for that job. Best sister ever."
Ethan’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping in his cheek, but his eyes remained deadly calm. "And Julian Vance?"
"Arsenic in his protein powder," Carter bragged, enjoying the thrill of total dominance over the billionaire standing helpless before him. "Vanessa is the brain, I'm the hands. We've been doing this since high school, Bennett. And now, you're going to write a wire transfer for ten million dollars to my offshore account, sign an affidavit dropping all claims against Vanessa, or I put a bullet through your head right now and go finish off your little girl at Cedars."
Carter raised the rifle, aligning the sights directly between Ethan’s eyes.
Ethan didn't blink. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, silver digital audio recorder. He clicked the stop button with a clear, loud click.
Carter frowned. "What the hell is that?"
"That was your full, unforced confession to the pre-meditated murders of Clara Bennett and Julian Vance," Ethan said calmly. "Transmitted live via satellite feed to Detective Marcus Kane and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office."
Carter’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "You son of a—"
Before Carter could pull the trigger, three sudden, deafening CRACKS shattered the night air!
The heavy reinforced glass windows of the office blew inward in a shower of sparks! Sniper rounds fired from six hundred yards away ripped through Carter’s rifle, shattering the steel receiver and knocking the weapon violently from his hands, breaking two of his fingers in the process!
Carter shrieked in pain, falling to his knees, clutching his bloody hand.
Heavy footsteps thundered through the fog as eight heavily armed SWAT officers and Detective Kane burst through the doors, their tactical lights blinding the room!
"LAPD! DO NOT MOVE! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Detective Kane stepped up to Carter, kicking him onto his stomach, driving his knee into Carter’s back, and snapping iron cuffs over his wrists with brutal efficiency.
Kane looked up at Ethan, shaking his head in disbelief and profound respect. "You have ice water in your veins, Bennett."
May you like
Ethan picked up the silver recorder, tossing it gently onto the desk beside Carter’s bleeding face.
"That's for Clara," Ethan whispered.
