Chapter 1 - The Echo of Broken Promises

The air inside the top-floor executive suite of Miller Meridian Capital felt unnaturally thick, as though the heavy glass walls had suddenly sealed off the rest of Manhattan’s skyline.

"Her name is Emma," Liam repeated softly, his small fingers carefully balancing the cracked silver locket on the edge of my polished mahogany desk. "She said you're our daddy."

I couldn't move. The word daddy felt like an alien weight in my throat, heavy enough to dismantle the thirty-eight years of cold, calculating precision I had used to construct my life.

Five years ago, Emma Vance was an associate architect working on the Miller Meridian HQ redesign. She had been vibrant, fiercely independent, and completely unimpressed by my net worth. For eighteen glorious, terrifying months, she had softened every sharp edge of my existence. But when my father’s health failed and the board threatened to oust me in a hostile takeover, I chose the empire over her. I walked away, convincing myself that a man raised in a cage of ruthless ambition had no business trying to love anyone. I had left her with a fat check that she never cashed, a heart I had deliberately broken, and—unbeknownst to me—a secret growing inside her.

"Where is she, Liam?" I asked, kneeling on the carpet so I was eye-level with the twins. My tailored pants pulled against my knees, but I didn't care. "Where did she go after she brought you to the building?"

Liam looked at Lucas, who was clutching his tiny red-hooded elbows tight against his ribs. Lucas finally spoke, his voice barely audible above the low hum of the floor-to-ceiling air filtration system.

"A bad man with a shiny pin came to our apartment," Lucas whispered, his eyes wide with a fear no child should ever carry. "Mommy told us to hide in the laundry closet. She put the locket in my bag and said... she said we had to take the yellow taxi to the tall glass tower with the big 'M'."

"A shiny pin?" I pressed, my mind instantly racing. "Lucas, what did the pin look like?"

"Like a hawk," Lucas murmured. "A gold hawk."

My blood ran ice cold.

The Golden Hawk was the crest of Vance Global Security—a high-end private intelligence firm exclusively retained by my uncle, Victor Miller. Victor was the majority shareholder of Vance Global and my fiercest rival on the Miller Meridian board. He had spent the last decade trying to find a wedge to unseat me as CEO.

"Claire!" I roared, standing up so fast my chair rolled back into the glass wall.

My assistant scrambled back into the office, her eyes wide as she held her tablet like a shield. "Yes, Mr. Miller?"

"Call Marcus," I ordered, referring to my head of personal security, an ex-Delta Force operator who answered only to me. "Tell him to get a tactical team to 442 Elm Street—Emma’s last known residential address. Now. And clear my entire schedule for the next forty-eight hours."

"Mr. Miller, the board meeting for the Sterling Acquisition is in twenty minutes—"

"Cancel it!" I snapped, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "If anyone on the board asks, tell them I am handling a critical internal matter. Get Marcus in here right now, and bring up the building's private garage elevator."

Liam looked up from his pancakes, his little brow furrowing. "Are you mad at us, Daddy?"

May you like

The word hit me like a physical blow, knocking the breath from my chest. I looked down at the two boys—the mess of blond curls, the sharp little ears, the ice-blue eyes that mirrored my own soul—and felt something long dormant snap inside me.

"No, buddy," I said softly, crouching back down and placing a hand gently over Liam’s tiny shoulder. "I am not mad at you. I'm mad at the people who made your mother scared. And I am going to bring her back."
