Chapter 4 - The Lake Placid Breach

The storm hit as the Blackhawk helicopter cut through the heavy cloud cover over the Adirondack Mountains. Below us, the dense pine forest stretched out like a dark, impenetrable sea, surrounding the ancient stone-and-timber estate my grandfather had built seventy years ago.
"Ten minutes out, boss," Marcus shouted over the roar of the rotor blades, checking his tactical vest. "We have six heavily armed guards on the perimeter. Victor's private contractors. They have authority to use lethal force if we trespass."
"They are on my property," I said coldly, racking the slide of a 9mm pistol Marcus had handed me. "If they raise a weapon, neutralize them."
The helicopter hovered low over the treeline, dropping ropes through the pouring rain. Marcus’s team went down first, silently disappearing into the dark forest like shadows. I followed, sliding down the rope and hitting the wet, pine-needle-covered ground with a heavy thud.
Suppressors hissed in the dark. Within four minutes, Victor's perimeter guards were bound, gagged, and disarmed without a single gunshot being fired.
I stepped through the shattered glass of the estate’s rear conservatory doors, my boot soles crunching loudly against the floorboards.
The main hall was dark, lit only by the occasional flash of lightning through the high gothic windows. Bound to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the room was a woman.
Her dark curls were matted with rain, her clothes simple and worn. Her wrists were tied behind her back with heavy plastic zip-ties, but her chin was held high, her dark brown eyes burning with defiance even as a line of dried blood trickled down her cheek.
"Emma," I breathed.
She snapped her head up, her eyes widening in pure shock as I stepped out of the shadows.
"Jason?" she gasped, her voice raspy and choked with disbelief. "No... no, Jason, you can't be here! It's a trap!"
Before I could take another step, a sharp voice echoed from the balcony above us.
"He's right, my dear. It is a trap."
Victor stepped into the dim light of the second-floor gallery, holding a small detonator switch in his gloved hand. Down below, two armed Vance Global operatives stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, pointing automatic rifles directly at my chest.
"You were always so predictable, Jason," Victor laughed softly. "Follow the girl, save the day. You really are your mother's son. So soft."
"Let her go, Victor," I said smoothly, stepping in front of Emma to block her from the rifles. "You have the encryption keys. You have what you wanted."
"I don't just want the encryption keys, nephew," Victor spat, his face twisting into a mask of bitter hatred. "I want Miller Meridian. And as long as you and your surprise heirs exist, the board will never hand the crown to me. But if you die here in a tragic estate fire caused by a security breach... and those two little boys are left without parents... I become their legal guardian. And I control their stock."
"You won't touch my sons," I growled, my hand tightening around the pistol hidden behind my back.
"They're cute kids," Victor mocked, leaning over the balcony railing. "They have your eyes. It’s a shame they'll grow up in an international boarding school in Switzerland, never knowing who their father really was."
Emma let out a furious scream, struggling violently against her ties. "Don't you dare touch my boys, you monster!"
May you like
"Goodbye, Jason," Victor said, his thumb hovering over the detonator button.
"Marcus, now!" I roared.
