Chapter 6 - The Long Road Home

The private medical suite at Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital was quiet, save for the soft beeping of the heart monitors.

Emma lay in the plush hospital bed, an IV drip hooked into her hand, treating her for mild smoke inhalation and exhaustion. I sat in the armchair beside her, holding her hand, while Liam and Lucas slept piled together on the small sofa across the room, wrapped in fuzzy blankets.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the East River, casting a warm golden glow through the high windows.

"They look so much like you," Emma said quietly, watching the boys' rhythmic breathing. "When Liam was born, the nurses kept saying he had his father's jaw. Every time I looked at them, Jason... I saw you. And it broke my heart every single day."

"Why didn't you tell me, Emma?" I asked softly, my voice laced with immense regret. "When you found out you were pregnant... why didn't you come back?"

Emma turned her head to look at me, her brown eyes soft but filled with lingering pain.

"Your father came to my apartment three days after you broke up with me," she revealed. "He brought two lawyers and a squad of security men. He showed me the fake server logs. He told me that if I ever tried to contact you, or if I ever revealed the pregnancy to the press, he would use his influence to ensure I was convicted of federal corporate theft. He promised to make sure I gave birth in a prison ward and that my babies would be put into state custody."

I buried my face in my hands, a deep, agonizing shame washing over me. "My father was a monster. And I was too blind to see what he was doing."

"You didn't know, Jason," Emma said gently, reaching out to touch my arm. "You were trying to survive him, just like I was. But three weeks ago, Victor’s men found us in Brooklyn. I knew Victor wasn't like your father—Victor was reckless. He was going to use the boys to force you out. I had no choice. I had to get them to you."

I stood up, leaning over the bed, and gently took her face in my hands.

"You gave them a life, Emma," I said, my voice shaking with emotion. "You protected them. Now it's my turn to protect all three of you."

The hospital room door opened softly, and Claire stepped inside holding a stack of legal documents.

"Mr. Miller," Claire whispered. "The board of directors is holding an emergency session in one hour. News of Victor’s death and his illegal activities with Vance Global has leaked to the Wall Street Journal."

I looked down at Emma, then at my sons, feeling a profound shift in my priorities.

"Let's go end this," I said.
