Chapter 9 - The Family Legacy

The heavy doors opened, and an older, white-haired gentleman stepped into the office, accompanied by a young woman holding a thick leather portfolio.
It was Mr. Harrison, the former senior partner at Vance & Associates—the architecture firm where Emma had started her career before my father had ruined her reputation.
"Jason," Mr. Harrison said, bowing his head respectfully before turning to Emma with deep, visible remorse in his eyes. "Emma... thank you for seeing me."
"Sit down, Mr. Harrison," Emma said politely, pointing to the leather sofa.
The old man sat down stiffly, taking a deep breath. "I came here today to offer a formal, public apology on behalf of my firm. Five years ago, when the allegations were made against you... I should have investigated. I should have fought for you. Instead, I let Miller Meridian’s legal power intimidate me into firing you."
He gestured to his assistant, who laid a heavy gold plaque on the coffee table.
"The American Institute of Architects has officially cleared your record, Emma," Harrison revealed softly. "And we would be honored if you would accept the Lifetime Design Excellence Award at this year's gala."
Emma stared at the plaque. For five long years, she had carried the weight of being branded a thief, forced to hide her brilliant mind in obscurity while struggling to afford rent in small apartments.
She looked over at me. I gave her a warm, proud nod.
"I accept the clearance, Mr. Harrison," Emma said, her voice steady and full of grace. "Because my sons deserve to know their mother is a woman of integrity. But I don't need the award. The only work that matters to me now is the work I am doing right here."
Mr. Harrison wiped a tear from his eye, nodding solemnly. "I understand. You are a far better person than any of us deserved, Ms. Vance."
After Harrison left, Liam ran over and picked up the heavy gold plaque, holding it up to his brother.
"Look, Lucas!" Liam shouted. "Mommy got a gold medal!"
Lucas clapped his hands happily. "Yay, Mommy!"
I walked over, pulling Emma into my arms, resting my chin on top of her head as we watched our boys play with the shiny gold plaque.

"You built all of this, Emma," I whispered softly into her hair. "You brought the warmth back into this cold place."
"We built it together, Jason," she murmured, turning her head to kiss my jaw. "We built it for them."
