Chapter 1 - The Cold Dawn of Reckoning

The wind whipped across the snow-covered driveway, biting at my face, but I barely felt the cold. My arms held my ten-day-old twins, Leo and Oliver, tucked safely beneath the heavy down coat I had managed to pull over them. Their tiny heartbeats pressed against my chest, steady and warm—a sharp contrast to the ice flowing through my veins.

On the other end of the line, Marcus Vance’s voice was as sharp as broken glass.

"Evelyn? Is it done?"

"They just locked the doors, Marcus," I said, my voice eerily calm. "Graham pushed me down the steps. Vivian told him to call security if I tried to crawl back."

There was a heavy, dangerous pause on the line. Marcus was not only the chief legal counsel for Vale International Holdings; he was my late father’s most trusted friend and the man who had helped me build an eight-billion-dollar empire from nothing.

"The bastard lay hands on you?" Marcus demanded, his voice dropping into a register that signaled absolute corporate destruction. "Evelyn, where are you? I’m dispatching the executive security convoy right now."

"I'm at the entrance of the Lake Forest estate," I said, looking back at the glowing windows of the mansion. "Bring two bulletproof SUVs, the forensic audit team, and the physical asset possession warrants. It’s time to strip the Harringtons down to their bare bones."

"I'm ten minutes away," Marcus replied. "Evelyn... are the boys safe?"

"They're safe," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss against Oliver's warm forehead through the blanket. "And by sunrise, they will own everything their father tried to steal."

Ten minutes in the freezing night felt like seconds as the cold rage kept me warm. Right on cue, two sleek black Maybach SUVs glided silently through the snow, their headlights cutting through the darkness like twin daggers.

The doors flew open. Marcus stepped out, wearing a dark trench coat, flanked by four armed private security officers and my personal assistant, Clara.

"Ma'am!" Clara rushed forward with a warm cashmere blanket, instantly wrapping it around me and the babies, ushering us into the heated interior of the lead Maybach. "Oh God, Evelyn! How could they do this to you?!"

"Because they believed they were gods and I was a beggar," I said softly, settling into the leather seat as Clara carefully checked the twins. They were sleeping peacefully, completely oblivious to the war that had just begun.

Marcus sat across from me, pulling out a encrypted tablet.

"The execution order is ready, Evelyn," Marcus said, his eyes burning with fierce loyalty. "Harrington Luxe—the high-end fashion brand Graham works for as Regional Vice President—is ninety-four percent owned by Vale International. We bought the debt six months ago. Graham’s executive contract contains a moral turpitude clause and an immediate revocation of all corporate perks upon termination."

"What about the mansion?" I asked.

"The deed to the Lake Forest property was purchased through the Vale Family Revocable Trust," Marcus smirked grimly. "Graham thinks he owns it because his mother forged a lease agreement through a corrupt property manager. That manager was fired two hours ago and has already signed a full confession. The Harringtons are currently squatting on private corporate property."

I looked out the tinted window at the mansion glowing on the hill. Graham and his mother were likely celebrating upstairs, drinking my vintage champagne, boasting about how they had thrown out the "poor seamstress."

"Marcus," I said smoothly, leaning back against the leather headrest. "Freeze every bank account associated with Graham Harrington and Vivian Harrington. Issue a immediate recall on the corporate Black Card, lock the garage access codes for the three sports cars registered under Harrington Luxe, and file an emergency petition for sole physical and legal custody of Leo and Oliver."

"And the eviction?" Marcus asked, his finger hovering over the tablet screen.

I looked down at my sons, feeling the warmth of their breath against my neck.

"Serve the eviction notice at 6:00 AM," I commanded softly. "I want them thrown out into the snow in the exact same clothes they wore when they threw me out."
