Chapter 2 - The Morning After

At 5:45 AM, the Lake Forest estate was bathed in a pale, frosty sunrise.
Inside the master suite, Graham Harrington stretched luxuriously across his silk sheets. He poured himself a glass of orange juice from the bedside tray, feeling a profound sense of relief. For eighteen months, he had played the dutiful husband to Evelyn Vale—a quiet, plain girl who spent her days working over a sewing machine in a cramped studio downtown. He had married her because he thought she was docile, easily manipulated, and grateful for the lifestyle his "wealth" provided.
When she got pregnant with twins, his mother, Vivian, had convinced him that Evelyn was a parasite trying to lock down a permanent meal ticket. They had carefully orchestrated her exit, waiting until ten days after the delivery to throw her out into the cold, ensuring she was weak, exhausted, and incapable of fighting back.
A soft knock came at his bedroom door.
Vivian stepped inside, wearing a silk robe and holding a cup of espresso. Her diamond rings sparkled in the morning light.
"Did you sleep well, darling?" Vivian asked, taking a sip.
"Better than ever, Mother," Graham smirked, adjusting his silk pajama shirt. "I’ll drop off the divorce papers at her downtown studio afternoon. With no money for a lawyer, she’ll sign whatever we put in front of her."
"Make sure she waives all child support," Vivian added coldly. "We don't need those bastards coming back in eighteen years demanding a piece of the Harrington legacy."
Suddenly, a loud, booming crash echoed from the ground floor, followed by the shattering of heavy glass.
Graham jumped out of bed, frowning. "What the hell was that? Did the maid drop something?"
"Go check," Vivian said, her brow furrowing.
Graham threw on a velvet robe and hurried down the grand marble staircase. As he reached the foyer, he stopped dead in his tracks.
The grand wrought-iron front doors had been breached. Standing in the center of the foyer were four burly men in tactical black uniforms bearing the silver crest of Vale Security. Beside them stood a sharp-looking man in a tailored suit holding a thick stack of legal documents—Marcus Vance.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Graham shouted, his voice cracking with outrage. "Who the hell are you?! This is private property! I am Graham Harrington, Regional VP of Harrington Luxe!"
Marcus Vance stepped forward, looking at Graham as if he were an annoying insect.
"Mr. Harrington," Marcus said smoothly. "My name is Marcus Vance, Chief Legal Counsel for Vale International Holdings. I am here to execute an immediate notice of trespass, corporate asset recovery, and forced eviction."
Vivian came rushing down the stairs, clutching her robe. "Security! Call the police, Graham! These thugs broke into our home!"
"Your home?" Marcus chuckled, a cold, terrifying sound. He raised a document for them to see. "Mrs. Harrington, this property is registered under the Vale Family Revocable Trust. The lease agreement you presented to the local HOA was forged by a disgraced property manager who is currently in police custody."
"That's impossible!" Vivian shrieked. "My son pays the lease through his corporate account!"
"His former corporate account," Marcus corrected. "As of 12:01 AM this morning, Harrington Luxe—a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vale Holdings—has terminated Graham Harrington’s employment due to gross moral turpitude, breach of fiduciary duty, and corporate embezzlement."
Graham went deathly pale. His knees shook beneath his velvet robe. "Terminated?! You can't fire me! The CEO of Harrington Luxe is my personal mentor!"
"The board of Harrington Luxe reports directly to the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vale International," Marcus said, taking a step closer. "And she has personally signed your termination papers."
"She?" Graham stammered, a sickening feeling forming in the pit of his stomach. "Who... who is the CEO?"
The front doors swung open once more.
The cold morning wind blew into the foyer, bringing with it a flurry of white snow. Stepping through the threshold, flanked by two executive bodyguards, was a woman dressed in a floor-length tailored white cashmere coat, her dark hair swept up in an elegant crown, her eyes cold, piercing, and terrifyingly familiar.

Graham’s jaw dropped open. Vivian gasped, dropping her porcelain espresso cup. It shattered on the marble floor.
It was Evelyn.
