Chapter 10 - The Triumph of the Heart
Two years later.
The summer sunset painted the Chicago sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and deep purple.
On the private beach behind the Lake Forest estate, three-year-old Leo and Oliver were building a massive sandcastle near the water's edge. Their laughter carried over the soft sound of the waves lapping against the shore.
Julian knelt in the sand beside them, helping Oliver construct a grand tower out of wet sand, while Leo carefully placed tiny seashells along the perimeter wall.
"Look, Mommy!" Leo cheered, running up to Evelyn, who sat on a wooden bench near the dunes. "We built a castle for you!"
Evelyn leaned down, picking up her little boy and hugging him tight against her chest. "It’s the most magnificent castle I’ve ever seen, Leo!"
Oliver ran up too, throwing his arms around Evelyn’s legs. Julian stood up, brushing the sand from his linen trousers, walking over to join them. He wrapped a loving arm around Evelyn’s waist, pulling her and the boys close.
On her finger, a simple, elegant sapphire ring caught the warm light of the setting sun—a promise of a quiet, beautiful future they had built together.
