Chapter 6 - The Pit of Despair

By the following evening, Graham thought he had found a lifeline.

Sitting in a cramped, foul-smelling room at the Edgebrook Motel, Graham watched the local news station on a flickering television. The news anchor was covering his story, painting him as a victim of an abusive, mega-wealthy corporate tycoon.

"I have her now, Mother!" Graham laughed hysterically, clutching a warm beer can he had bought with his last few dollars. "The media is destroying her reputation! Vale International stock dropped three percent today! Her board will force her to settle!"

Vivian sat on the edge of the stained mattress, wrapped in a thin blanket, her eyes dark and hollow. "Settling isn't enough, Graham. We need fifty million dollars. We need our house back!"

"We’ll get it!" Graham gloated. "My lawyer—the public defender they assigned me—says public pressure will force her to give us whatever we want to quiet the story down!"

Suddenly, the news broadcast interrupted its regular programming with an urgent breaking news bulletin.

"We interrupt this broadcast for a major development in the Vale-Harrington scandal," the news anchor announced, looking grim. "Vale International Holdings has just released raw, unedited security footage captured from the Lake Forest estate on the night of the incident."

Graham’s smile froze. The beer can slipped from his hand, spilling across the carpet.

On the screen, in crystal-clear high-definition audio and video, the entire night unfolded before millions of viewers.

The public saw Graham shoving a weak, ten-day-postpartum Evelyn down the stone steps. They heard Vivian’s shrill voice screaming, "Get out and take your bastards with you!" They heard Graham laughing and saying, "A cheap little designer like you trapping me with babies?" And they saw Evelyn holding two tiny, shivering newborns in her arms as snow fell over them.

The television anchor reappeared, looking visibly disgusted.

"The footage conclusively disproves Mr. Harrington’s claims," the anchor stated sharply. "Furthermore, the Cook County District Attorney’s office has just issued a felony arrest warrant for Graham Harrington on charges of aggravated domestic assault and child endangerment. Federal authorities have also launched an investigation into Vivian Harrington for corporate bank fraud."

Outside the motel room, sirens began to wail, growing louder and closer by the second.

Red and blue lights flashed through the thin window blinds of Room 114.

Vivian began to scream in pure terror. "Graham! They’re here! They’re here for us!"

Graham scrambled backward toward the bathroom, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "No! No! This can't be happening!"

The flimsy wooden motel door was kicked open with a thunderous bang. Six tactical police officers surged into the room with weapons drawn.

"Graham Harrington! Get on the ground! Do it now!"

Graham threw his hands up, falling flat on his face onto the dirty carpet. As the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, he looked up through his tears at the television screen, where a photo of Evelyn Vale stood proudly at a global summit, glowing with elegance, power, and unshakeable grace.

He had tried to destroy a queen. And in doing so, he had utterly annihilated himself.
