Chapter 13 - The Fractured Sanctuary

Within a week, the legal sharks began to circle. A formal summons arrived at my doorstep, demanding a mandatory psychological evaluation for both Ethan and Emma, initiated by an 'anonymous party' concerned for their well-being. The system I thought had protected us was being weaponized against us once again.
Ethan’s behavior changed first. The happy, confident boy who loved to flip pancakes became quiet, locking himself in his room, drawing dark, chaotic pictures. One afternoon, I found him staring at the ocean.
"She called the school, Dad," Ethan whispered, tears streaming down his face. "A lady spoke to me through the fence at recess. She said Mommy was coming to take us home."
Rage, pure and blinding, consumed me. Sarah had broken the restraining order. She was playing dirty, targeting a seven-year-old child. I realized then that walking away from my wealth had stripped me of my armor. Without the corporate empire's lawyers and security details, I was just a man in a house by the sea, exposed to the elements.
I called Julian, my one loyal friend left on the executive committee. "I need security, Julian. The best money can buy. And I need a war chest. I’m coming back to the city."

"I thought you were out permanently, Marcus," Julian said, his voice grave.
"I was," I said, watching Emma play unaware on the rug. "But they are trying to take my children. I will burn the city down before I let them touch them."
