Chapter 8 - Rebuilding from the Ruins

The legal fallout was immense. The investigation revealed a massive web of money laundering, blackmail, and corporate espionage that stretched from New York to Estonia. My father’s empire crumbled overnight, and his attempts to implicate my company fell flat when Marcus and the FBI recovered the uncorrupted files proving my complete independence.

Sarah survived, but she faced twenty years in federal prison for child abandonment, embezzlement, and conspiracy.

I returned home immediately. The corporate boardroom that once felt like the center of my universe now seemed utterly insignificant. I resigned as CEO of my company, appointing my trusted COO to run daily operations. I kept my shares and my board seat, but my full-time job had changed.

I was a father first.

Emma was discharged from the hospital two weeks after my return. Her cheeks had regained their rosy color, and her infectious laugh once again filled the rooms of the temporary house I had rented for us.

Ethan, however, carried deeper scars. He suffered from night terrors, often waking up screaming that the "bad men" were coming to lock him in his room.

I spent every night sitting by his bed, holding his hand, repeating the same promise: "I’m here, buddy. I’m not going anywhere."
