Chapter 2 - Cracks in the Armor

In a warm, quiet hospital room across town, Lily lay under soft flannel blankets. A heating pad warmed her pale cheeks, and an IV drip hydrated her fragile body. The doctor had diagnosed her with severe mild hypothermia and acute emotional shock, documenting every bruise, frost-chilled fingers, and shivering spasm for the medical record.
Claire sat beside the bed, softly stroking Lily’s hair.
"Mom?" Lily whispered, her eyes fluttering open. "Are we going back there?"
"Never," Claire said gently, kissing her daughter’s forehead. "We are never going back to that dark place again. You are safe now, my brave girl. I promise you."
While Lily rested, Claire met with Detective Rodriguez in the hallway. Armed with medical reports, Mrs. Dalton’s sworn witness statement, and photographic evidence of Lily’s soaked clothes and the newly changed lock, Claire laid out a bulletproof criminal complaint for Child Endangerment and Criminal Neglect.
Meanwhile, panic reigned at Elm Street.
Evelyn spent the entire afternoon frantically calling high-priced defense lawyers and old family friends. But every attorney who reviewed the trust documents gave her the exact same grim answer:
"Claire Mercer is a brilliant senior strategist at the courthouse. Her paperwork is flawless. You have no legal standing, Mrs. Mercer. The house belongs to her. If you fight this in court, you will lose, and you will be forced to pay her legal fees."
"We need to fight her!" Natalie raged, pacing the living room. "She can't just throw us into the street! Frank, say something!"
Frank, who had spent years living off Evelyn's false prestige, looked terrified. "If Claire takes the house, what about the money in the joint account? Evelyn, you said that account was linked to the house equity!"

Evelyn shrank into her armchair. The illusion of her dominance was crumbling. For decades, she had used cold mind games to control Claire, painting her as the ungrateful outcast while spoiling Natalie. She had believed Claire was weak because Claire chose peace over conflict.
She had mistaken Claire's patience for weakness.
