The judge’s sentencing was stern and uncompromising.
"Evelyn Mercer," Judge Vance declared, looking down from the bench. "You demonstrated a shocking level of cruelty toward a defenseless child in your care, driven by arrogance and financial greed. You showed no remorse until the consequences reached your own doorstep."
The sentence was pronounced:
Three years in state prison for felony child endangerment and neglect.
Full financial restitution of $120,000 to be paid to Lily’s trust from the liquidation of Evelyn's personal assets and retirement funds.
A permanent, lifetime restraining order prohibiting Evelyn from coming within 1,000 feet of Claire or Lily.
Natalie was ordered to perform 500 hours of community service and pay partial restitution, her social standing completely shattered. Frank was apprehended two weeks later in Nevada and faced separate federal charges for bank forgery.

As court officers placed handcuffs on Evelyn’s wrists, she looked over at Claire one last time, begging with her eyes for a shred of sympathy.
Claire stood tall, holding a folder of completed legal papers. She gave Evelyn a single, curt nod—the final closure of a dark chapter—and walked out into the bright afternoon sun.
