Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Mercer Empire

Deprived of the house and with their bank accounts frozen pending the fraud investigation, Evelyn, Natalie, and Frank were forced to check into a cheap, rundown motel on the outskirts of the city.

Without luxury to mask their ugly personalities, the family quickly turned on each other.

"This is all your fault!" Natalie screamed at Evelyn in the cramped motel room. "You insisted on changing the locks! You said Claire was too weak to react! Now I have a criminal record pending and no money!"

"Don't you dare raise your voice to me!" Evelyn yelled back. "I made you who you are!"

"You made us broke!" Frank shouted, packing his single suitcase. "I'm leaving. I'm not going to jail for your endless pride."

Frank walked out that night, taking the last of their shared cash and abandoning Evelyn and Natalie to face the legal storm alone.

Meanwhile, Claire spent her evenings restoring the house on Elm Street. She hired contractors to completely renovate the interior—repainting the dull walls with vibrant lavender and golden sunlight yellow, replacing old furniture, and turning Evelyn’s former cold parlor into a massive, sun-drenched art studio for Lily.

Lily’s therapist reported remarkable progress. The trauma of that rainy night began to heal as Lily saw her mother stand like an impenetrable shield between her and the world.

"Mom," Lily asked one evening as they packed up their hotel room to return to the renovated house. "Is Grandma ever going to hurt us again?"

Claire sat down beside her daughter and took her hands. "Never again, baby. Nobody will ever make you feel small or unwanted ever again."
