Chapter 9 - Rebirth at Elm Street

Spring arrived in Portland, bringing warm air, blooming cherry blossoms, and clear blue skies.
The house at 1428 Elm Street was unrecognizable. The old, gloomy dark wood had been replaced with warm, inviting oaks and bright walls. The front yard was filled with blooming white hydrangeas and red roses.
On a bright Saturday afternoon, Claire and Lily hosted a grand housewarming party.
Mrs. Dalton was there, sitting happily on the newly expanded front porch, sipping iced tea. Claire’s supportive colleagues from the courthouse brought gifts and warm laughter. Lily’s school friends ran around the back garden, their laughter echoing through the air that had once been weighed down by fear and silence.
Claire stood on the porch, holding a glass of fresh lemonade. She looked at the front door.
The brass lock was shiny, smooth, and welcoming.
Lily ran up the steps, her hair blowing in the soft spring breeze, her face full of color, health, and pure joy.
"Mom!" Lily called out, holding up a small silver key attached to a keychain shaped like a sunflower. "Look! I locked the back shed after putting my bike away!"

Claire smiled, kneeling down to hug her daughter tightly. "Works easily, doesn't it?"
"Yeah," Lily said softly, resting her head on Claire’s shoulder. "It turns so smoothly. It feels like... home."
