Chapter 4 - Ambush at the Courthouse

On the seventh day, Evelyn decided to play her ultimate card: public humiliation.
She dressed in her finest black coat, styled her silver hair, and marched directly into the Multnomah County Courthouse during peak morning hours. She intended to create a scene, forcing Claire to back down to save her professional reputation.
Evelyn burst into the crowded courthouse lobby, tears streaming down her face in a masterclass of staged tragedy.
"Claire! How could you do this to your own mother?!" Evelyn sobbed loudly, gathering a crowd of bailiffs, attorneys, and judges. "I raised you! And now you’re throwing an old, helpless woman onto the street because of a minor misunderstanding?!"
Natalie stood beside her, recording video on her phone, ready to leak it to social media to destroy Claire’s standing.
Claire emerged from the elevator holding a leather briefcase. She didn't flush with embarrassment. She didn't run. She walked with calm, measured grace into the center of the rotunda, standing right in front of Evelyn.
"A minor misunderstanding, Evelyn?" Claire’s voice echoed clearly through the quieted lobby.
Claire calmly reached into her briefcase and pulled out laminated, high-resolution photographs. She turned them toward the gathering crowd and Natalie's camera lens.
"Is leaving an eleven-year-old child in 40-degree rain for five hours a 'misunderstanding'?" Claire presented the medical charts showing hypothermia indicators. "Is changing the locks on my house without legal right a 'misunderstanding'? Is embezzling $120,000 from my daughter's college fund a 'misunderstanding'?"
The onlookers gasped. Whispers rippled across the lobby. Judges and senior prosecutors stared at Evelyn with cold disgust.
Natalie slowly lowered her phone, her face burning with shame.

Claire stepped closer to Evelyn, speaking in a whisper that hit like ice. "You came here to humiliate me in my workplace. But all you’ve done is document your own downfall in front of fifty officers of the law. You have six days left to leave my house."
Evelyn stood paralyzed as two armed bailiffs stepped forward. "Mrs. Mercer, you need to step away immediately, or you will be placed under arrest for disturbing courthouse proceedings."
