Chapter 2 - The Crimson Mark

The heavy, imported Egyptian cotton blanket fell to the floor with a soft thud. Alejandro stood frozen, the accusation of infidelity dying instantly in his throat. The fury that had driven him up the stairs vanished, replaced by a cold, sickening dread that wrapped around his spine.

Valeria lay curled on the silk sheets, her hands trembling as she tried to cover her exposed legs. Her skin, usually a warm olive tone, was a map of horrifying discoloration. Across her thighs and calves were deep, dark purple bruises—the unmistakable marks of fingers gripping her flesh with violent force. But it was her swollen, badly discolored left ankle, tightly bound in a makeshift bandage torn from an old t-shirt, that made Alejandro drop his phone onto the mattress.

"Valeria..." Alejandro gasped, his voice losing all its billionaire arrogance, dropping into a fractured whisper. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, his hands hovering over her bruised legs, terrified that touching her would cause more pain. "What is this? My god, Valeria... did someone touch you? Who did this to you?"

Valeria pulled her knees tighter to her chest, a choked sob escaping her lips. "I told you to leave it alone, Alejandro," she wept, refusing to look him in the eyes. "I told you... if you dug into this, everything would fall apart."

"Who did this?" he roared, the protective instinct of a husband overriding his confusion. "Was there someone in this room? The man Marcela saw—"

"The man Marcela saw was a doctor, Alejandro!" Valeria finally snapped, her voice cracking with pure exhaustion and terror. She forced herself to sit up, her hand instantly moving to protect her six-month-pregnant belly. "A private doctor her husband hired. They brought him through the back gate at two in the morning to threaten me. They told me if I told you what really happened on Tuesday night, they would ensure I was committed to a psychiatric facility before the baby was born. They said your family would take my child, and you would believe every single lie they fed you!"

Alejandro’s mind reeled. His sister Marcela. His brother-in-law Ricardo. His mother Doña Esther. The golden, untouchable Aranda family dynasty.

"Tuesday night..." Alejandro stammered, trying to piece together his memories. "I was in Monterrey. I was closing the land acquisition for the new high-rise project. You called me... you said you had slipped on the garden stairs and were resting."

"I didn't slip," Valeria whispered, a cold, dead look entering her eyes. She reached out and grabbed Alejandro’s collar, pulling him close until he could smell the stale, metallic scent of her fear. "On Tuesday night, I went down to the basement archives to find the inventory lists for the upcoming gallery exhibition Doña Esther is hosting. I wasn't supposed to be down there. I accidentally opened the secure vault—the one disguised behind the mahogany wine racks."

Alejandro went completely rigid. "The corporate vault? The family papers?"

"I didn't find papers, Alejandro," Valeria said, her tears flowing freely now. "I found ledgers. I found bank accounts under shell corporations in Panama and the Cayman Islands. And I found the forged signatures. Hundreds of them. All bearing your name, your specific corporate seal, authorizing millions of dollars in illegal capital transfers from your real estate empire into a private fund."

She gripped his shirt tighter, her knuckles turning white.

"Your brother-in-law Ricardo walked in on me. When he realized what I was looking at, he panicked. He grabbed me, Alejandro. He dragged me across the concrete floor, screaming that a gallery girl wasn't going to ruin his life's work. He threw me down the basement stairs. That's how I sprained my ankle. That's how I got these bruises. And your mother... Doña Esther stood at the top of the stairs, watching it happen. She looked down at me and said, 'Keep your mouth shut, child, or we will make sure you lose everything, including that baby.'"

Alejandro felt the room spin. The blurry photograph Marcela had sent him wasn't evidence of a lover. It was a calculated trap. They had framed his pregnant wife for infidelity to discredit her before she could ever tell him the truth about how his own family was systematically bleeding his empire dry.
