Chapter 10 - A Future Written in Light

One Year Later — December 25

Christmas morning arrived over Overland Park wrapped in a soft, magical blanket of fresh, powdery snow.

The Hardy residence was filled with the intoxicating aromas of roasting maple ham, fresh cinnamon rolls, and brewing hazelnut coffee. The giant fireplace roared with warm orange flames, casting a soft, golden glow across the cozy living room.

Sitting under the towering Christmas tree was five-year-old Casey, wearing matching green polka-dot pajamas. She was surrounded by opened wrapping paper, excitedly playing with a high-end wooden toy barn and a set of miniature horses. She was healthy, radiant, and utterly thriving—a happy, confident young girl who hadn't shed a tear of fear in over a year.

Corinne sat on the soft plush couch, wrapped in a hand-knit wool blanket, sipping hot coffee.

Beside her sat David Vance. He wore a dark red holiday sweater, his arm wrapped comfortably around Corinne’s shoulders, pulling her gently against his chest.

"She loves the horse barn," David whispered, leaning down to kiss the top of Corinne’s head.

"She takes after her grandmother," Corinne smiled warmly, looking at her daughter. "And her mother."

David shifted slightly on the couch. He reached into his sweater pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

Corinne’s heart skipped a beat. She looked up at David, her eyes widening softly.

David took a deep breath, his handsome face filled with profound sincerity and deep, unwavering devotion. He took Corinne’s hand in his, holding it gently.

"Corinne," David began softly, his voice trembling with emotion. "A year ago, I came into your life during its darkest hour. I watched you fight like a warrior for your daughter. I watched you rebuild your world from the ashes with grace, courage, and an incredible heart. You and Casey didn't just let me help you... you gave me a family. You gave me a home."

Casey stopped playing with her toys and scrambled up onto the couch, sitting right between them, looking at the velvet box with wide, curious eyes. "Is that a ring, David?"

David laughed softly, his eyes never leaving Corinne's. He gently opened the box, revealing a breathtaking platinum ring set with an exquisite, flawless cushion-cut diamond that caught the golden firelight.

"Corinne," David continued, looking into her eyes. "I love you with all my heart. I promise to stand by your side in every storm, to protect this family with my life, and to love you and Casey forever. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Corinne’s eyelashes, glistening like diamonds on her cheeks.

She looked at David—the man who had stood beside her when the world was burning, the man who had loved her daughter as his own, the man who had brought peace back into her soul.

"Yes," Corinne whispered, her voice rich with joy. "Yes, absolute yes!"

Casey squealed with delight, throwing her arms around both of them at once. "Yay! David is gonna be my daddy forever!"

David slipped the ring onto Corinne’s finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate embrace, while Casey snuggled tightly between them on the couch.

Outside the window, the morning sun broke through the winter clouds, illuminating the snow-covered landscape in brilliant, shimmering gold. The night of terror, lies, and fear was gone forever, replaced by a radiant future written in light, strength, and an everlasting love.
