Chapter 6 - A Christmas Miracle

The blizzard continued to rage outside, but inside Aunt Miriam’s cozy living room, the atmosphere was warm, glowing, and filled with the scent of pine and cinnamon.

It was 8:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

A towering Christmas tree stood in the corner, sparkling with golden lights and delicate glass ornaments that Aunt Miriam had collected over forty years. Underneath the tree sat dozens of brightly wrapped presents.

Corinne opened the front door, shaking the snow from her military coat.

From the living room, four-year-old Casey came running as fast as her small legs could carry her, wearing new fleece Christmas pajamas featuring dancing reindeer.

"Mommy!" Casey squeaked, throwing herself into Corinne's arms.

Corinne caught her, spinning her around in a circle while laughing happily, before dropping to her knees by the fireplace to hug her tight.

"Hey my little brave girl," Corinne whispered, kissing both of Casey's soft cheeks. "Guess what?"

"What?" Casey asked, her big brown eyes shining with excitement.

"The bad people are gone," Corinne said gently, rubbing her thumb against Casey's wrist, which was now fully healed and free of bruises. "They will never, ever come back to our house again. And you get to stay with Mommy forever and ever."

Casey let out a squeal of delight, throwing her tiny arms around Corinne’s neck. "Forever?!"

"Forever and ever," Corinne promised, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes.

Aunt Miriam walked into the room carrying a tray of hot chocolate topped with miniature marshmallows, followed by David Vance and Marcus Thorne, who had spent the evening securing the final emergency custody protection orders from an on-call federal judge.

"The federal judge signed the emergency temporary custody order ten minutes ago," Marcus Thorne announced with a wide grin, taking a mug of hot cocoa. "Corinne has 100% sole legal and physical custody of Casey. Ross’s parental rights have been suspended pending his criminal trial."

"And the ranch?" Aunt Miriam asked, her voice thick with emotion.

"The fraudulent deed transfer to Vance & Sterling has been completely annulled," David Vance added. "The 120-acre Leawood Ranch is officially restored to the Victoria Vance Family Trust, with Corinne as the sole trustee for Casey."

Casey pulled a small wrapped box from beneath the tree and handed it to Corinne. "This one is for you, Mommy! I picked it out with Aunt Miriam!"

Corinne sat on the rug beside her daughter and carefully peeled back the festive paper. Inside was a hand-painted ceramic picture frame. Inside the frame was a photograph that Aunt Miriam had taken yesterday: Corinne in her uniform, sitting on the porch swing, holding Casey, who was smiling radiantly while wearing her Santa-hat teddy bear.

At the bottom of the frame, painted in clumsy, beautiful four-year-old handwriting, were the words: BEST MOMMY EVER.

Corinne pressed the frame to her chest, holding her daughter close as the snow fell softly outside the window, knowing that the longest, dark night of her life was finally coming to an end.
