Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Home

Spring arrived in Overland Park with a breathtaking explosion of pink cherry blossoms, fresh green grass, and warm, gentle breezes.
In early April, Corinne officially moved back into her home on Elm Street.
With the help of Sarah, Aunt Miriam, and a team of local contractors, every trace of Gwendolyn and Ross’s presence had been utterly erased from the house. The dreary, cold furniture Gwendolyn had brought in was replaced with warm, sunlit decor, soft ivory couches, and vibrant oil paintings of the Kansas countryside.
Over the fireplace, where the fake family portrait had once hung, now hung a breathtaking, massive canvas photograph: Corinne and Casey, laughing together on the green hills of the Leawood Horse Ranch, surrounded by wildflowers.
Corinne stood in her renovated home office. The cheap digital keypad on the door had been replaced with a high-security biometric scanner tied directly to her military security clearance.
Her phone chimed on her desk. It was an email notification from the United States Department of Defense.
Corinne opened the message.
MAJOR CORINNE HARDY: PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT YOUR REQUEST FOR SPECIAL CONTINENTAL U.S. ASSIGNMENT HAS BEEN APPROVED. EFFECTIVE MAY 1, YOU ARE OFFICIALLY TRANSFERRED TO THE CHIEF SECURITY DIRECTORATE AT FORT LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS. NO FURTHER OVERSEAS DEPLOYMENTS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR COMMISSION.
Corinne let out a long, quiet breath, a radiant smile breaking across her face. No more nine-month deployments across the globe. No more missing birthdays, Christmas mornings, or bedtime stories. She was home for good.
The sound of joyful giggling echoed from the backyard.
Corinne walked to the French doors leading out to the patio.
Out on the lush green lawn, four-year-old Casey was running through the automatic sprinklers, wearing yellow rain boots and a bright pink sun dress. Her dark curls bounced in the sunshine, her face lit up with pure, unadulterated childhood happiness.
Chasing after her with a garden hose was David Vance, who had resigned from his active-duty assignment in D.C. to accept a senior partnership at a top private civil rights law firm in Kansas City.
Over the past four months, David had become a constant, protective, and loving presence in their lives. He wasn't just the brilliant legal mind who had helped save her daughter; he was the man who brought quiet laughter, safety, and deep warmth back into Corinne’s world.
David looked up, catching Corinne’s eye through the glass doors. He waved, his handsome face bursting into a warm, genuine smile.
"Mommy! Come out!" Casey yelled, waving her tiny hands frantically. "David says we’re gonna build a giant wooden treehouse in the big oak tree!"
Corinne pulled open the glass doors, stepping out into the crisp spring air, feeling the warm sun kiss her face.

"A treehouse?" Corinne laughed, walking down the patio steps. "Only if it has a secret slide!"
"Deal!" David laughed, throwing his hands in the air.
