Chapter 3 - The Deposition Trap

By noon, the legal chess game had escalated into open warfare.

The CPS caseworker, Ms. Marcus, completed her initial home evaluation at Aunt Miriam's house. Thanks to Aunt Miriam’s impeccable legal standing and Corinne’s cooperation, temporary physical custody remained with Aunt Miriam, with supervised daily visitation granted to Corinne. Ross's emergency motion to completely isolate Casey was denied.

However, the formal custody hearing was set for December 26—day after Christmas. Ross and Gwendolyn were pushing for a rapid ruling, hoping to catch Corinne unprepared before she could secure formal military legal representation.

They underestimated her speed.

At 2:00 p.m., Corinne stepped into the sleek glass tower of Vance & Sterling Financial in downtown Kansas City. She wasn't wearing civilian clothes. She was dressed in her full Army Service Uniform, immaculate brass shining, her ribbons displaying two Tour of Duty medals and a Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Beside her walked Marcus Thorne, a powerhouse federal trial attorney and former JAG officer whom David Vance had personally recommended.

They walked directly into the 14th-floor corner conference room.

Sitting on one side of the mahogany table was Ross, wearing a brand-new designer suit bought with stolen funds, and Gwendolyn, looking radiant in a silk blouse, her legs crossed comfortably. Next to them sat Arthur Sterling, a silver-haired man with cold, predatory eyes.

"Major Hardy," Arthur Sterling said, leaning back in his leather chair with a patronizing smile. "I see you brought an audience. But this is an informal settlement meeting. Your uniform won't sway a family court judge."

Ross smirked, looking at Corinne with absolute contempt. "Just sign the full custody transfer, Corinne. You're a military nomad. You can't raise a daughter when you're deployed half the year across the globe. Give us the ranch management rights, and we’ll drop the criminal child endangerment report."

Corinne didn't sit down. She placed both hands flat on the glass table, leaning forward until she was staring directly into Ross's eyes.

"You have twenty-four hours to pack your bags and clear out of my house," Corinne said, her voice dripping with lethal quietness.

Gwendolyn laughed, a sharp, grating sound. "Your house? Check the deed, sister. Ross signed a quick-claim deed transferring the property title to Vance & Sterling Holding Trust last week to cover legal retainers. You don't own a brick of that house anymore."

"Is that so?" Marcus Thorne, Corinne's attorney, stepped forward. He unzipped his leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of certified legal documents, slapping them onto the table with a loud thud.

Arthur Sterling’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the documents.

"What is this?" Sterling asked.

"That," Marcus Thorne smiled coldly, "is a Federal Lis Pendens injunction filed an hour ago with the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. It freezes all transfer of title for the Hardy residence, the Leawood Horse Ranch, and all liquid accounts managed by Vance & Sterling under federal racketeering statutes."

Ross’s face drained of color. "Racketeering?! What are you talking about?"

"We are talking about Title 18, United States Code, Section 1030," Corinne stated, her eyes locking onto Arthur Sterling. "Unauthorized access to a military officer's secured home communications network while she is deployed overseas on an active DoD contract. That isn't family law, Mr. Sterling. That is a federal felony carrying a fifteen-year mandatory minimum sentence."

Gwendolyn’s smug smile instantly evaporated. She looked frantically at Arthur Sterling. "Arthur... what is she talking about? You said the server wipe was untraceable!"

"Shut up, Gwendolyn!" Sterling barked, his calm demeanor finally cracking.

"Too late," Marcus Thorne added cheerfully, pulling a silver flash drive from his pocket. "We have the IP handshake logs, courtesy of DIA Cyber Command. Your associate hacked Corinne’s home server to delete the video evidence showing Gwendolyn striking Casey on November 10th. Unfortunately for you... Corinne’s system auto-synced to a secondary DoD military server every midnight."

Corinne leaned closer to Gwendolyn, whose hands had begun to shake violently.

"I have the unedited video, Gwendolyn," Corinne whispered. "I have you grabbing my four-year-old daughter by her arm and twisting her wrist because she wouldn't call you 'Mommy'. The war has just begun."
