Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The confrontation in the Vance & Sterling conference room sent shockwaves through the enemy camp, but desperate people with multi-million-dollar stakes do not surrender easily.

That evening, as rain turned into a bitter winter sleet across Kansas, Corinne sat in Aunt Miriam's kitchen, reviewing the recovered video logs with David Vance, who had flown in from Washington D.C. on an urgent military legal leave.

The video on the laptop screen was painful to watch.

It showed the living room of Corinne’s house on November 10. Gwendolyn was holding a glass of wine, screaming at little Casey because the child had accidentally spilled juice on Gwendolyn’s designer carpet. When Casey started crying and calling for her mother, Gwendolyn violently grabbed the little girl's left wrist, twisting it until the child sank to her knees in tears. Ross was sitting on the couch in the background, watching the entire scene without moving a finger to help his daughter.

"That video alone will put Gwendolyn in prison for felony child abuse," David Vance said, his face dark with fury. "And Ross will go down for felony child endangerment and perjury."

"It's not enough," Corinne said, staring at the screen. "Arthur Sterling will claim he was just representing a client and had no knowledge of the child abuse or the illegal server wipe. He’ll cut Ross and Gwendolyn loose to protect himself and the money."

"She's right," Aunt Miriam said, pouring fresh tea. "Arthur Sterling has judges in his pocket in Johnson County. If he manages to detach himself from their criminal charges, he can still execute the fraudulent foreclosure on your ranch before the custody trial even starts."

Suddenly, the front door bell rang furiously.

David Vance immediately signaled Corinne to stay back while he moved to the window. Outside in the driveway, a sleek black SUV was parked with its hazard lights flashing.

Standing on the porch was a middle-aged woman wearing a wet trench coat, wringing her hands nervously.

Corinne recognized her instantly: it was Elena Perez, Gwendolyn’s former executive assistant at her bankrupt event planning firm.

Corinne opened the door. "Elena?"

"Corinne... please, you have to help me," Elena gasped, shivering violently from the freezing cold. "They’re going to frame me. Gwendolyn and Arthur... they made me sign the bank transfer documents for the ranch trust accounts! They told me it was a routine corporate restructuring!"

Corinne brought Elena inside, wrapped a warm blanket around her shoulders, and handed her a mug of hot tea.

"Take a breath, Elena," Corinne said gently. "Tell us everything."

Elena took a shaky sip of tea, her eyes wide with terror. "Three months ago, Gwendolyn came to Arthur Sterling’s office crying that she was going to be ruined by her casino debts. Arthur told her there was a way to take control of Victoria’s $12 million ranch trust before you returned from your deployment. But they needed Ross to cooperate."

"How did they get Ross on board?" Corinne asked.

"Ross was deeply in debt too," Elena revealed. "He took out $200,000 in illegal gambling loans from offshore accounts linked to Arthur Sterling’s shell companies. Arthur promised to wipe Ross’s debt completely if Ross agreed to divorce you, fabricate the domestic abuse claims against you, and grant Gwendolyn full legal guardianship of Casey."

"And the money from the ranch?" David Vance pressed.

"Arthur has already arranged a buyer," Elena confessed, pulling a folded paper from her coat pocket. "A foreign real estate syndicate. They’re closing the sale on December 24—Christmas Eve. They plan to flatten the horse ranch and turn it into a high-density commercial shopping plaza. If the sale goes through, the $12 million will be wired straight to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, out of reach of US courts forever."

Corinne took the paper. It was an un-redacted copy of the purchase agreement, complete with Arthur Sterling’s personal signature as the trust representative.

"Christmas Eve," Corinne murmured, her eyes narrowing into cold steel. "They want to liquidate everything while the courts are closed for the holiday."

"Not on my watch," Corinne swore softly. "We're going to crash their Christmas Eve closing."
