Chapter 5 - Twas the Night Before Christmas

December 24 arrived with a howling blizzard that covered Overland Park in eight inches of blinding white snow.

While the rest of the city was wrapped in cozy holiday celebrations, a secret war was reaching its climax inside the glass-walled executive boardroom of the Commerce Bank Building in downtown Kansas City.

Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the massive conference table, wearing a dark navy suit, a glass of twenty-year-old scotch resting by his elbow. Sitting beside him were Ross and Gwendolyn. Gwendolyn was wearing a mink coat, sipping champagne, already celebrating the impending windfall.

On the other side of the table sat three representatives of the buyer syndicate, accompanied by their corporate attorneys.

"All conditions have been met," Arthur Sterling said smoothly, sliding a heavy stack of closing documents across the polished table. "The trust management authority has been fully transferred to my client, Miss Gwendolyn Vance. Once you wire the initial $12 million payment to the designated escrow account, the deed to the Leawood Ranch is yours."

Ross looked nervously at his watch. "Let's hurry this up, Arthur. My custody hearing with Corinne is on December 26. I want this wrapped up before her military lawyers cause any more trouble."

"Relax, Ross," Gwendolyn scoffed, patting his arm condescendingly. "Corinne is hiding at Miriam's house with her stupid little legal injunctions. She doesn't have the legal standing to stop a private trust liquidation on Christmas Eve."

"Is that a fact, Gwendolyn?" a voice echoed from the hallway.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud bang.

Gwendolyn froze, her champagne glass stopping inches from her lips. Ross jumped out of his chair so fast he knocked his water glass over.

Corinne stepped into the boardroom.

She wore her crisp, immaculate military dress uniform. Behind her marched four armed Deputy United States Marshals, followed by Federal Prosecutor Amanda Vance, Marcus Thorne, and two special agents from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Arthur Sterling roared, slamming his hands onto the table as he stood up. "This is a private corporate closing! You have no right—"

"Arthur Sterling," Prosecutor Amanda Vance interrupted loudly, stepping forward and pulling a signed federal warrant from her briefcase. "By order of the United States District Court, this closing is shut down immediately."

"On what grounds?!" Sterling sneered.

"On the grounds of Wire Fraud, Bank Fraud, Tax Evasion, and Money Laundering under Title 18 of the United States Code," Special Agent Miller of the IRS declared, stepping past the Marshals. "We have seized the Cayman Islands escrow accounts. And we have a full confession from your former corporate secretary, Elena Perez."

Gwendolyn’s face turned gray. "Elena...? That little snake!"

"And there's one more thing," Corinne said, stepping directly up to Ross. She reached into her coat and pulled out an iPad, tapping the screen and placing it face-up on the center of the table.

The unedited home security video began to play in crystal-clear 4K resolution.

Gwendolyn’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged boardroom, screaming at little Casey, followed by the terrifying sound of the child sobbing as Gwendolyn twisted her arm.

The corporate buyers looked at the screen in utter disgust. The lead buyer immediately stood up, buttoning his jacket. "The deal is off. We are withdrawing our offer immediately. You people are disgusting."

"Wait! Don't leave!" Ross panicked, reaching toward the buyers. "We can lower the price! We can—"

"Ross Hardy," Special Agent Miller barked, stepping forward with handcuffs dangling from his fingers. "Put your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, filing false police reports, and felony child endangerment."

Ross backed away, his eyes wide with panic, looking at Gwendolyn. "Gwen! Do something! You said Arthur had this handled!"

"Don't touch me, you pathetic coward!" Gwendolyn screamed, backing toward the glass window. "This was all his idea! He wanted the money to pay his gambling debts!"

"Liars! Both of you!" Arthur Sterling spat, his polished persona completely crumbling into desperate rage.

The U.S. Marshals moved in with practiced precision. Within three minutes, Ross, Gwendolyn, and Arthur Sterling were all forced to their knees, their arms cuffed securely behind their backs.

As the Marshals led Gwendolyn past Corinne, Gwendolyn stopped, glaring at her half-sister with pure venom. "You ruined my life, Corinne! You were always the favorite! You got everything!"

Corinne looked at her half-sister with calm, unwavering pity.

"Mom didn't love me more because I was her favorite, Gwendolyn," Corinne said softly. "She loved me because I never tried to destroy our family for money. You did this to yourself."
