Chapter 3 - The Birth of a New Life

When I finally opened my eyes, the blinding white light of the operating room had been replaced by the soft, warm glow of a luxurious bedroom. The walls were lined with dark mahogany wood, a large crackling fireplace cast a golden light across the floor, and the heavy velvet curtains kept the harsh winter storm at bay.

I moved my hand to my stomach. It was flat, wrapped tightly in sterile medical bandages.

A sudden, consuming panic gripped my throat. “My baby...” I gasped, trying to sit up, but the sharp pain from my surgical incision forced me back down against the silk pillows. “Where is my baby?!”

“She is right here, Clara.”

Dante’s deep voice drifted from the shadows near the corner of the room. He stepped into the light, and my breath hitched. In his massive, tatted arms, he was cradling a tiny, delicate bundle wrapped in a soft pink blanket. The contrast between the ruthless mafia don and the fragile newborn child was staggering.

He walked over to the side of the bed, his movements incredibly gentle, and carefully laid the baby in the crook of my arm.

I looked down, and my heart completely melted. She had a thick tuft of dark hair, a tiny button nose, and when her little eyelids fluttered open, she revealed a pair of brilliant, deep hazel eyes. She was perfect. She was healthy. She was alive.

“She’s a fighter,” Dante said quietly, leaning against the bedpost, his gaze fixed on my face. “Just like her mother. Dr. Evans said if we had been two minutes later in that alley, her heart would have stopped.”

I squeezed my daughter close, my tears falling softly onto her blanket. “Thank you, Dante. You saved us. I don't have anything to give you. Nathaniel took my inheritance, my house, my documents... I am completely penniless.”

“I don't want your money, Clara,” Dante said, his expression turning cold and serious. “Five years ago, before your father passed away, he did a favor for the Salvatici family. He protected my younger brother from a corrupt federal indictment. I told him then that the Salvatici family would always owe the Harrington-Harper bloodline a debt of blood. When my scouts told me what Nathaniel did to you tonight, the debt became personal.”

He stepped closer, leaning down so his shadow enveloped me, but it didn't feel threatening. It felt like an iron shield.

“You cannot go back to the city, Clara. Nathaniel and Victoria have already filed a fraudulent missing persons report, claiming you ran away with an unknown lover to steal corporate secrets. If you show your face, their lawyers will destroy you and take this child just to protect their merger.”

“Then what do I do?” I whispered, looking up at him in despair.

“You stay here,” Dante commanded flatly. “You change your identity. You raise your daughter within these walls, where my army protects you. You heal, you study, and you wait. Nathaniel Harrington thinks he won the world tonight. Let him enjoy his empire. Because when the time is right, we are going to burn it to the ground.”

I looked down at my baby girl, her tiny fingers wrapping tightly around my thumb. “Her name is Aria,” I whispered. “Aria Salvatici-Harrington.”

Dante’s lips curled into a rare, dark smile. “Welcome to the family, Aria.”
