Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

Nathan knelt in the freezing mud, completely ignoring the rain ruining his tailored suit. He reached out, his large hands gently gripping Emma’s trembling shoulders. The oversized dress she wore was ice-cold, clinging to her fragile frame. When he pulled her into his arms, she didn’t wrap her hands around his neck like she used to. She stayed rigid, her little body tense, as if hugging him too tightly would break a rule.

"Emma, look at me," Nathan whispered, his voice cracking through the sound of the downpour. "You are not in trouble. You have done nothing wrong. Daddy is home now."

Emma’s hazel eyes remained wide and fearful, darting toward the glowing kitchen window on the second floor. "But Mrs. Grayson said... she said if I didn't finish the chores before the clock struck eight, I wouldn't get any dinner. She said you were too busy making money to care about a messy girl."

A terrible, suffocating rage ignited in Nathan’s chest. It was a cold, calculating anger that made his vision sharpen. For two months, he had been paying Mrs. Arrington Grayson—a highly recommended, aristocratic governess from a prestigious Charleston agency—four thousand dollars a week to provide top-tier care for his motherless daughter. He had received daily emails with forged reports about Emma's "excellent progress, music lessons, and balanced diet."

"Come here," Nathan said, scooping Emma up into his arms. She felt impossibly light, as if she hadn't had a proper meal in weeks. He picked up his discarded suitcase with one hand and marched toward the grand mahogany front door.

He didn't use his key. He kicked the door open, the heavy wood slamming against the interior wall with a sound like thunder, announcing his return not as a weary businessman, but as a predator reclaiming his territory.
