Chapter 4 - The Silent Ledger

By midnight, Mrs. Grayson had left the property in her luxury sedan, leaving a heavy, tense silence in the house. Emma had finally fallen asleep, her small fingers still gripping the sleeve of Nathan’s shirt even in her dreams.

Nathan sat on the edge of the bed under the dim glow of a bedside lamp, his laptop open. He was a multi-million dollar venture capitalist; his entire career was built on unearthing hidden liabilities and tracking financial fraud. He opened his security network application, only to find that the camera logs for the last two months had been completely wiped cleanly from the hard drive.

"Smart," Nathan muttered to himself, his jaw tightening. "She deleted the footage."

He picked up his phone and called Lucas Vance, his corporate security chief and a former federal digital forensics investigator.

"Lucas. I need you at my house right now," Nathan ordered without preamble. "Bring the recovery hardware. Someone wiped my home security servers, and my daughter has been abused. I want every deleted byte of data recovered by sunrise."

"I'm on my way, boss," Lucas replied, his tone instantly shifting into a cold, professional gear.

Two hours later, Lucas was stationed in Nathan’s home office, his specialized software bypassing the deleted directory protocols. By 4:00 AM, the digital fog cleared, and the recovered videos began to play on the monitors.

Nathan watched the screen, his fists clenching so tightly his knuckles bled. The video showed Mrs. Grayson locking Emma in the dark pantry for hours because she dropped a plate. It showed Vanessa, Mrs. Grayson's niece whom she had brought into the house under the guise of a "tutor," wearing Nathan's late wife's jewelry and screaming at Emma to clean the bathrooms.

"She wasn't just a bad nanny, Nathan," Lucas said grimly, pointing at a financial log. "Look at the grocery and maintenance accounts you gave her access to. She’s diverted over eighty thousand dollars into a private offshore account in the last six weeks alone. This is systematic grand larceny and child exploitation."
