Chapter 7 - The Arrest in the Rain

The rain returned to Charleston that Friday evening, turning the cobblestone streets slick and dark. Mrs. Grayson, her expensive clothes soaked and ruined, walked quickly through the shadows of the shipping docks, trying to reach a private boat owned by a corrupt associate she had paid off years ago.
As she stepped onto the wooden pier, a pair of bright high-beams flashed on, blinding her.
Nathan stepped out from the shadow of a massive shipping container, holding a black umbrella over his head. Beside him stood the chief of police and four uniform officers with handcuffs ready.
"Going somewhere, Margaret?" Nathan asked, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
Mrs. Grayson backed away toward the edge of the water, her hair wild and coming loose from her bun. "You think you’ve won, Nathan? You’re a cold, absent father who left his kid to count money! I gave her structure! I gave her what she deserved!"
"You treated my daughter like a slave because you are a parasitic thief who preys on vulnerable families," Nathan said, stepping aside as the police officers moved in.
Mrs. Grayson fought back, screaming and cursing as she was slammed against the wet hood of a police cruiser. The heavy metal handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists, cutting into her skin.

"Nathan Holloway! You will regret this! My lawyers will tear your family apart in court!" she screamed as she was forced into the back seat of the squad car.
Nathan didn't answer. He simply watched the taillights disappear into the rainy darkness. The legal system would handle her body, but he still had to fix his daughter’s soul.
