Chapter 8 - Healing the Broken Pieces

Two months passed. The Arrington Agency went completely bankrupt under the weight of Nathan's relentless lawsuits, and Margaret Grayson was sentenced to twelve years in a maximum-security prison for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and child abuse without the possibility of parole. Vanessa received five years as an accessory.

But inside Nathan's home, the healing process was slow.

Emma still flinched whenever a door closed too loudly. She would sit quietly at the kitchen table, asking for permission before she drank a glass of milk or used a pencil. Nathan had canceled all his international business trips indefinitely, turning over the daily operations of his venture capital firm to his trusted partners. He stayed home every single day, cooking her meals, sitting with her during therapy sessions, and learning how to be a real father.

One sunny afternoon, Nathan found Emma sitting on the back porch, staring at the garbage bins near the garden fence.

"Emma," Nathan said softly, sitting beside her on the wooden steps. He handed her a small, beautifully wrapped gift box.

She opened it carefully. Inside was a pair of bright red, custom-designed sneakers with sparkling gold laces.

"Those are your running shoes, sweetie," Nathan smiled, brushing a stray hair from her cheek. "From now on, there are no chores before dinner. There are no rules about staying outside. If you want to run through this garden, you do it because you want to play. And you never, ever have to be afraid of this house again."

Emma looked at the shoes, then up at her father. For the first time in months, a small, genuine spark of light appeared in her hazel eyes. "Can we run together, Daddy?"

"Every single day," Nathan whispered, pulling her into a tight, warm hug. This time, she hugged him back, her small arms locking around his neck with all her strength.
