Chapter 5 - The Corporate Strike

The next morning, Nathan arrived at the glass-fronted headquarters of the Arrington Governess Agency in downtown Charleston. He didn't ask for an appointment. He walked straight past the receptionist and kicked open the double doors of the CEO’s private office.

Arthur Arrington, a wealthy, silver-haired aristocrat, looked up from his desk in shock. "Nathan? What is the meaning of this intrusion?"

Nathan slammed his tablet onto the mahogany desk. The screen automatically played a video of Mrs. Grayson throwing a bucket of dirty water at Emma's feet while the little girl wept.

"This is Mrs. Grayson, your premier employee, inside my home," Nathan said, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, low frequency. "She has embezzled eighty thousand dollars of my money, physically abused my daughter, and threatened me with a fraudulent custody report."

Arthur Arrington’s face turned completely bloodless as he stared at the screen. "Nathan... listen to me. This is an isolated incident. Mrs. Grayson has a flawless twenty-year record with our firm. If this video gets out, it will destroy our agency’s reputation."

"I am going to destroy more than your reputation, Arthur," Nathan leaned over the desk, his eyes burning with liquid midnight. "I am launching a multi-million dollar civil lawsuit against your agency for corporate negligence and human rights violations. By noon today, my financial firms will short your company’s stock, and by tomorrow morning, the district attorney will have a copy of this hard drive. Unless you give me everything you have on her real background."

Faced with total financial ruin, Arrington broke instantly. He unlocked his private safe and pulled out a confidential file. "She’s not who she says she is, Nathan. Her real name is Margaret Grayson. Five years ago, she was quietly dismissed from a wealthy estate in Atlanta under similar suspicions, but her family covered it up. We kept it quiet to protect our brand."

Nathan snatched the file from his hands. "Your brand is dead, Arthur."
