Chapter 10 - A Fortress Built for Two

Six months later.

The autumn sun was setting over the Portland harbor, painting the sky in brilliant hues of burnt orange, pink, and deep gold.

In a quiet, sunlit park overlooking the water, a small family gathering was taking place. Ryan was pushing a stroller along the paved path while Emily laughed, tossing a frisbee for their golden retriever. Inside the stroller, six-month-old Leo was sitting upright, chubby, healthy, and babbling happily at the sea gulls flying overhead.

Sitting on a wooden park bench a few yards away was Amelia. She was wearing a cozy cream-colored knit sweater, a tablet in her lap showing schedules for the new regional pediatric trauma clinic she had recently been appointed to direct—a clinic funded entirely by a generous, anonymous endowment from a local charitable foundation.

A heavy, familiar arm slid wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her back against a warm, broad chest.

Amelia smiled, leaning her head back against Damon’s shoulder.

He was wearing a dark wool coat, smelling of expensive sandalwood and the fresh sea air. Over the past six months, the shadow hanging over his name had shifted. With the Moretti syndicate fully dismantled by federal authorities and Damon systematically transitioning his family's vast assets into legitimate maritime shipping, renewable energy, and public infrastructure, the rumors of the "Mafia Boss of the Maine Coast" had faded into legends of the past.

"You're working on your day off again, Dr. Brooks," Damon murmured into her hair, his lips brushing the crown of her head.

"I'm reviewing applicant resumes for the chief nurse position, Mr. Blackwell," Amelia replied smoothly, turning her face to kiss his jawline. "It's very important work."

"Not as important as the reservation I have for us at eight," Damon countered softly, his thumb gently caressing her arm through her sweater.

Amelia looked over at Ryan and Emily, who waved happily at them from across the lawn. Baby Leo let out a loud, adorable laugh that echoed across the quiet park.

"Look at them," Amelia whispered, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of peace. "Six months ago, we were trapped in a storm, surrounded by guns and darkness. And now..."

"And now, we have a future," Damon finished gently. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box, and slid it into her lap.

Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the box up into Damon’s dark, intense eyes—eyes that no longer held the cold, lethal isolation of a mob kingpin, but the fierce, boundless devotion of a man deeply in love.

She opened the box. Inside sat a stunning ring featuring a rare, flawless sea-green sapphire surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds, catching the last golden rays of the setting sun.

"Damon..." Amelia gasped softly.

"I built a fortress on a cliff to keep the world out, Amelia," Damon said, his voice deep, rough with emotion, yet absolute in its certainty. "But you showed me that a home isn't built of stone and iron. It's built of the person you want to protect above all else. I don't want a life without you in it. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure joy shimmered in Amelia’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," Amelia whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Damon. Absolutely yes."

May you like

Damon gathered her into his arms, lifting her slightly off the bench as he kissed her deeply, the cool Atlantic wind swirling around them, carrying away the ghosts of the past and leaving only the brilliant, beautiful promise of forever.

The End
